A mountain of 3374 m in the Lepontine Alps, the highest peak of Formazza Valley/Pomattertal and the fifth peak of the Lepontine Alps, on the borderline between Italy and Switzerland. Also called Corno Cieco.
There are several ways leading to the peak; the one we followed (path/trace marked by cairns) starts from the Claudio e Bruno mountain hut (2710 m), goes up the southern spurs of the Blinnenhorn (whose peak is hidden by these spurs for most of the way up, hence the reason of the name - 'Blin(d)en' and 'Cieco' mean 'blind') crossing a lot of snowfields, then follows up to the summit the ridge that delimit the Gries Glacier to the southwest. Wonderful view on the Gries Glacier and all the surroundings three-thousanders such as Arbola/Ofenhorn, Sabbione/Hohsandhorn, Siedel Rothorn, Strahlgrat, Turbhorn, Rappehorn, Ober Rappehorn, Punta dei Camosci/Bettelmatthorn, Merezbachschije and Ritzhorner.
Some two to three hours from the hut, no particular difficulties but if there is much snow one has to be careful not to slide on the inclined snowfields.
25 July 2013.
