Thunderstorm Hike

Went up and partway ran into a terrible thunderstorm. Lightning and thunder, terrible rain, and I had a video camera! Should be interesting footage. Stuff was so soaked when we got to the top we just went on down.

Cool summit  Sucess!

The summit can also be attained via the AT from Wolfpen Gap (3300 ft) along GA 180. It's a slightly longer, but less rocky/steep approach than the one from the US 19 side at Neels Gap. For even more vertical, summit from Vogel State Park (2270 ft) as part of the Coosa Backcountry Loop.

We Heard It Is a Nice View  Sucess!

Climbed up via the Byron Reese trail. It was a cloudy, overcast day with a front moving in, and by the time we got to the top, it began raining. There was no view whatsoever from the top, though we talked to others who said it's wondeful. We got thoroughly soaked on the way down, but still had a great time!

My 1st summit  Sucess!

Me and my wife honeymooned at the Blood Mtn cabins and took this hike late in the afternoon. It was an awesome experience for me that started my obsession with the mountains. My wife was pretty stressed by the experience, though, since we went up without flashlights and got back to the cabin just after dark.

This was one of our favorite spots on a 2 week trip through the SE. Great views, a fun trail, a nice summit, and a cool shelter made for a very enjoyable visit.

Route Climbed: From Byron Reese Trailhead  Sucess!

Beautiful day. Great Views. We could actually see the skyscrapers of Atlanta in the distance. The other group at the top while we were there stated they have been there several times and that is the first time they could ever see Atlanta.

Great trip - Hiked in from Woody Gap  Sucess!

A beautiful, if hazy, day to be out there. A group of us from the Appalachian Trail Club wandered down, checking out the wildflowers, admiring the view, and having a grand old time!

Great AT Peak ... From Neels Gap  Sucess!

Living in the ATL ... this is a great peak to train on & is on the AT. Great views from the summit & snow sometimes during the winter months. Coming from Neels Gap to the summit of Blood Mountain ... stay on the AT for a great trail to Woody Gap.

Ice makes it interesting  Sucess!

Hiked up Blood Mountain from Byron Herbet Reece parking lot as a way to get to the Coosa Backcountry Trail. There was about 2 inches of snow on the summit, and ice on everything. The temperature was about 10F, and very windy. I didn't have crampons, or YakTrax, on this trip and paid for it. The ice on the smooth rock slabs made for some treacherous walking. I strained my knees and would have fallen a lot more than I did if I didn't bring my Pacer Poles. The Appalachians are beautiful in the snow.

Snow Climb from Byron Reese  Sucess!

I followed TomSellick's advice and did this after a few mountain snowfalls. The hike and views were incredible. I got to the top an hour before sunset, and experienced light snowfall occasionaly breaking to magnificent, late day views. I couldn't think of a better way to get out of the city for a day.

My post and I haven't even signed the summit log!

This is one of the great mountains of Georgia. From a distance, it's a huge whaleback of a peak and the hike up from Neel's Gap is a lot of fun (many switchbacks). Don't miss the balanced rock on the way up.

The summit is open and rocky and affords some of the finest mountain views in Georgia. Truly a grand Southern peak.
