easiest hiking on the AT. Just casual walking through that whole stretch. (Until you get to Tray Mountain.)

Bob,

I LOVE to look at a map of *any* section of the southern Appalachians just to enjoy the place names and types.

Big Butt (NOT Butte, BUTT)
Bear Pen Knob
Hog Pen Gap
Blue Ridge Swag
Granny Top
White Oak Stamp
etc.

Where the heck did the old timers come up with these names??? =)

Hemp Top. Chunky Gal Mountain. Big Frog. Pounding Mill.

As for Big Butt...there are a number of them. Over a dozen, I think. Some names are common that don't make a lot of sense. Shortoff Mountain--lots of those. Little Butt (usually near a Big Butt).

And then we have the common names that are sometimes within miles of another place with the same name: Laurel Knob, Green Knob, Sharp Top, Pine Mountain, Stone Mountain, Rocky Mountain, etc.

The southern Appalachians are interesting.
