Route Climbed: Standard trail Date Climbed: August 28, 2005  Sucess!

I'd climbed it in 1992 but went back with my brother so he could claim it as a highpoint. Beautiful day. 15 folks on the mountain including 9 on top. Didn't realize exactly where Chicken Out Ridge was until we got off it. No big deal. Semi-exposed 3rd class. This one gets old as you're getting down off it - that i remember from '92.

6 hours to summit after a long drive from Seattle the day before. Had a little trouble acclimating. Love this area.

I couldn't have asked for better weather, in fact it was perfect. Borah sits in a truly a beautiful setting and I found myself enjoying the views all day. The trail wastes no time in getting its elevation and chicken out ridge was kinda fun. Of course, I had the advantage of meeting "Bob" from Boise who had been up it before and knew the route up chicken out so I didn't have any guessing on the right way to go. He also took two novices under his wing and helped them not chicken out on chicken out ridge. (both grandmothers who just needed a coach).

Outstanding views from the summit and I found the worst part to be the part where the trail goes straight down through the trees for over two thousand feet. My trekking poles saved my butt many many times. Awesome mountain. I did Hyndman the previous week and felt Borah to be tougher.

Route Climbed: Southwest ridge Date Climbed: July 31, 2005

I drove down from Washington through Challis and Grand View Canyon on US 93 spotting this from the SP photos. After camping out, I started at 5:00 a.m. reaching 11,200 feet as it started to storm in the valley. I found hiking sticks to be quite useful on this mountain especially on the way down.

Route Climbed: SW Ridge Date Climbed: August 3, 2005  Sucess!

Joined Steve W. on his quest to reach the Idaho state high point. As a hiker he wanted somebody with climbing experience along but there was hardly any climbing. I wish the Chicken-out ridge was longer to make things more interesting. It is mostly a hike and there is hardly any snow left. Broke my altitude record on this one.

Fun long climb. I started at 5:00 and summited at 11:00. decent exposeure but I still thought that chicken out ridge was not as bad as what I had herd. all and all it made for a long butt kicking day. also my first Idaho 12er. one down eight to go.

What a great trip! It was my first time and I had a blast. We started early and made the summit in three hours forty five minutes. Great hike highly recommended

This was probably the most exhilirating climb I have done so far. The late spring snows turned this into a long, sketchy traverse that almost took us 9 hrs to summit! An ice axe is critical with any hint of snow on COR. All easy routes below the ridge are wiped out when snow is present.

We started early in the morning. The trail quickly gained elevation and by sunrise we were on the ridgetop. Chicken-out-ridge didn't seem that bad to me. We had the summit to ourselves.

Route Climbed: Standard South West ridge Date Climbed: Last time was August 04  Sucess!

Climbed this peak 4 times. It is very crowded. Too many people from Boise are getting into this "mountain climbing" thing. Oh well.

Route Climbed: Direct Southern Route Date Climbed: July 1986  Sucess!

Twelve out of thirteen attempts to the summit, all climbed between July '86 and June '89. All kinds of weather conditions, almost always windy. Didn't know about "Chicken out ridge" until I'd made the summit a half dozen time, still don't understand what the big deal is with that. P.S. Carry plenty of water, none along ascent route.

Route Climbed: SW Ridge Date Climbed: Aug 1989  Sucess!

Climbing partner, Pete Simpson and myself

started about 8AM and finished around 4PM.

Bypassed Chicken Out Ridge by dropping down

onto north face of ridge and traversing to snow-

chute and climbing up to the gap. A long climb

upwards of almost 6000 feet! Great views from

the top.

Climbed solo. Got to trailhead early evening and had an hour or so to myself before the hordes arrived. Left first thing in the morning and had the summit to myself for over an hour. Not difficult, but this beast will test your endurance for sure.

Route Climbed: chicken out ridge Date Climbed: Aug 16, 2002  Sucess!

Snow free climb in mid-August, 2002. The chicken-out ridge was an enjoyable exercise and I avoided the climber trails around some of the scrambles and stayed on the top of the ridge for the whole climb up after the notch. This provided some really nice views to the east, and more interesting climbing. I used the trails on the way back down from the summit and around point 11898.

Route Climbed: S.W. Ridge Date Climbed: August 18, 1996  Sucess!

After a failed attempt in 1994 due to following the wrong trail (a cattle trail) from the parking area, my 2 brothers and I (one from Ohio and I and the other from Boise at the time) decided to try again. This time we got an early start and on the right trail! We came upon a solo hiker at about the 9500 contour and invited him along with us. The going got easier above the tree line and the trail was obvious untill we got near "chicken out" where my youngest brother and I opted to go to the right of the ridgeline. The rock was much more stable there but with route finding and exposure. Upon reaching the crux and meeting up with the others we had to wait for a decending party to climb up. The climb down the crux was fairly easy and the the snow on the bridge was old and hard with a walkable trail worn into it. From here to the saddle below the summit block the wind was cold and howling but when we reached the summit it was amazingly calm and beautiful. We spent about 30 minutes on the summit signing the regester, taking pictures and video and just enjoying the view. On the descent we all took the north side of "chicken out" and I think it is much more rotten than the south. The hike down below the tree line was grueling on the knees and tricky footing in places but we made it back to our trucks near 9:00 pm. The climb totaled 12 hours. I plan on summiting Borah again in 2005 to take a new register befitting of the highest point in Idaho.
