atavistexcellent stargazing  Sucess!

This climb taught me the value of gaiters. My legs were so thrashed from the dry brush, and I stayed on the trail. other notes: Before this climb, I'd never experienced such a dry lonely wasteland, Although Boundary Peak affords stargazing which nearly made up for the discomfort.

The edge

Finally #45 after the third attempt...
Three flight later to Las Vegas from Montreal and they had to loose my lugages on the third try...
Well that didn't prevent me from getting to the top...
I froze sleeping in the car at the TH just with a garbage bag as a sleeping bag... but I was mentally powered to get to the top this time no matter what!!; Finally did... 5 to go!!

The scree is awful on the way up, but kinda fun on the way down. Saw wild horses in the meadow that day.

weeds19Quick trip down from Sacramento  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 1, 2001

I was in Sacramento for business and decided to make a run at Boundary before flying out the next evening. The drive in is a little confusing in the dark, and the scree sucks on the way up. The scree is awesome on the down though, and I arrived back at my truck in high spirits!

Hiked this peak with Cori, Anita and some members of the China Lake Mountain Rescue Group. Sugar snow and wet rock made things a little unpleasant above Trail Canyon saddle. It was a real slip and slide while descending. The weather couldn't have been better--sunny and cool with a light wind. The views from the top were mind boggling! There was just enough snow on Montgomery Peak to make things dangerous for a hiker in worn-out approach shoes. We didn't really have enough daylight anyway. Next time.

Drove the 4Runner to the saddle and hiked from there. There was snow on the peak above Trail Creek Saddle. Beautiful day, but cold with high winds, so we stayed bundled up the entire way. Did this one with my cousin Jack who I climbed Rainier with in July 1967.

From Queen Canyon. Yosemite was packed on this labor day weekend, but Boundary had no one. I stopped and watched the mustangs for quite awhile though. Beautiful animals, especially in the wild. Got too late to pop over to Montgomery. Maybe next time.

The weather didn't look promising, but it held and we were able to make it to the top. Saw the wild horses. They must be pretty used to all the hikers. Unfortunately they only seem to sh*t on the trail.

Great views of the Sierra from up there. It was pretty cool looking at Mt. Sill from across the owens valley which was our next destination in the days that followed. Thanks for inviting me John.

RanbozePerfect day on Boundary  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 3, 2006
Car camped at Queen Canyon Saddle and started our hike around 0640. Lots of volunteer trails heading up the north ridge, but they all seemed to end at the same spot. Very little wind and some nice puffy afternoon clouds made for a perfect day on Boundary. Continued over the traverse to Montgomery

Took me four tries to make it up this darn peak. I have never seen a mountain with such a nasty weather. Finally summitted after getting an alpine start. TR is on my website.

After reading posts, route finding sounded sketchy. But we found an obvious, easy-to-follow, signed trail. We had a little wind on top, but no clouds. Beautiful view of the Sierras. Great glissading on the return.

Met a couple of local 395 guys that were trying to camp on Montgomery. They got turned around when one guy took an unplanned glissade off the ridge to Montgomery. He arrested himself and his pack with a hiking pole.

Stayed at the Bed & Breakfast in Benton Hot Springs, CA. Drove most of the way up the road across from the old brothel until we thought it was too rough for our rental. Started hiking at about 7:00 AM. Walked about a mile to the trailhead. Had a nice hike until we got to the rocks and scree. Got off the trail and had a lot of difficulty climbing on the rocks. Took a lot longer than normal. Signed the register and took some pictures and then headed down. We reached our Ford Expedition and then drove to Lone Pine, California to do Mount Whitney the next day. Desolate country. HP #4.

Got a little overconfident, late start, walked up the 4WD section of the road, and only made it to the top of the scree section at 12k or so, when the temp dropped 10 or 20 degrees, and nasty black clouds chased us out of there. Got snow and heavy rain on the way back to the mine.

Summited in spite of hat-flappin' migraine-inducing winds this time, 2009.

Fun hike - there are some great towers near the summit, with 3rd-5th class routes on them....
