Moogie737 and I woke to find a dead battery in the car, but we climbed anyway and were able to coordinate a jumpstart from the summit on a weak-cell-signal. We found many nice folks at the Queen Canyon Mine who were willing to help, negating the previously scheduled jumpstart from a wrecker in Tonopah, who never showed up anyway. In any case, I thought it was quite a beautiful mountain.

Cool peak, pretty easy. Not much to look at either. Make sure you stay to the right and follow the creek bed to the saddle. Save you some effort.

Beautiful day but windy at the saddle. Very steep loose rock but made it up fine. Down was worse, and didn't see a single person all day.

Hiked with hgrapid and Erik. Still smokey, but better than White Mtn the day before. Tried the traverse over to Montgomery but didn't have my heart in it. The horned toad on the summit was hilarious.

Took the trail up from the saddle. It is very steep the whole way. We reached the summit around 9:45am, after a 3-hour slog.
There was still lots of smoke, but it wasn't too bad on the mountain itself.

With Tom Becht, met up with three others camped below Boundary. Followed what were probably 96avs01's tracks to Boundary, then went on to Montgomery. Tougher than expected with tons of soft snow. Trip Report

After punting on an attempt on the 26th due to heavy snow and minimal visibility we were able to slog out the route from Queen Canyon Mine on the 29th using snowshoes almost the entire day. Doubt many folks have to put in the effort that we did to top out on this highpoint.

Man, did the weather put a damper on my climbing plans for Memorial Day.

Our plans of camping at Queen's Canyon Mine didn't materialize since my Brother-in-law didn't make it to Benton until 11 PM so we slept in the back of his jeep. Drove up to about 9200 feet and spun out so we hiked up the road from there in about 4-6" of fresh snow and minimal visibility.

Made it Queen's Canyon saddle and start our traverse around the ridge in 6-10" of snow and near white-out conditions. Vis would vary from 1/4 mile to 25 yards. Called it a day at about 10,000 feet. Not worth being a statistic.

Had to scrap Plan B (Glass Mtn Ridge) and Plan C (Crater Mtn/South Crater) as their summits became obscured by clouds and dark skies as well.

Approached via Queen Canyon Mine, and climbed up ridgeline. Followed ridgeline Southwest and set up base camp at 11,000 feet. From big ridgline, crossed saddle and climbed up Northeast slope. There was between 2" and 2' of snow with drifts towards summit. Had to turn back 700 feet short of summit becasuse partner had altitude sickness and couldn't continue. Spent three days on the mountian, and trip was approximately 6 miles round trip. Saw wild horses along the way.

Moogie737Queen Mine route  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 21, 2011

First ascent on 11-3-07 w/ Nebben. Ben and I arrived at the TH 8 hours after leaving SLC. Camped near the mine entrance (there is a usable toilet there). Next am, 3+30 up with fresh snow covering portions of the trail above the Trail Canyon saddle. Sunny and a persistent, pesky wind of maybe 10-15 mph out of the ESE. American flag at the summit: support our troops. 2+30 down. Saw about two dozen wild horses just above and east of the "real" trail head where the wooden sign stands but says nothing. 2nd time 6-20-09 with Brent en route to attempt Mt. Whitney. Some leftover winter snow above Trail Canyon saddle but no need for crampons. Dug out the ammo box containing a nice summit register book and entered the appropriate info. Many wild horses with several foals at the north end of the traverse back from Trail Canyon Saddle. #3 6-25-10 w/ Brent, Todd & Zig. Little wind (nice) and many leftover cornice snow ridges en route to the top. 3+27 up from the Queen Mine entrance TH. Eight wild horses along the traverse from Trail Canyon Saddle. Todd & I went over to Montgomery, too. #4 6-21-11 With Brent. Nice way to begin the official summer. Warm weather, some snow lingering along the summit ridge from about 12,300'. More wild horses along return trail. #5 6-20-12. Warm, breezy, prep for Montgomery & Whitney. Wild horses sighted on my drive back to Hwy 6.

A great hike on a beautiful clear, nearly windless day. Had the summit all to myself. Two fighter jets soared overhead while I was on the summit. I waived my arms as they approached and I do believe one of the pilots saw me; he dipped his wing 90 degrees when he passed. This is my 21st state HP.

Via Trail Canyon and shot straight up the bowl to the east in lieu of the saddle (yeah, GREAT idea, dumbass) You ever hear of scree? Made decent time on the ascent despite myself and enjoyed Boundary and Montgomery summits (an extra 1 1/2 hrs). Made it down (via the scree of course) and out w/o seeing another soul. Who says peaks are too crowded?
