The day before this trip I did like 100 lunges at crossfit not a good idea at all so I was so sore ant this was my first time carrying crampons and ice axe so I didnt make it to the summit just to the saddle, still was a good experience I even got a lesson for self arrest from my experienced friend ;)

Hiked up the road from the lake, then up the trail. Dropped straight off the east side for a sweet glissade, worth it despite some crappy bushwhacking below. Note that the apparent cliff band has a narrow couloir cutting through. Mini-trip report.

I invented a little shutcut after studying my topo map going "White's Canyon". This was not the best of my ideas. I missed the point where the trail crossed over somehow- washed out? Snowed over? And I wound up wading through a creek up to my waist with every sort of poisonous prickly plant found in Utah slashing at me, plus spiders, a very dead and sickly looking deer and I had to climb down or around 5 small waterfalls. It added 4 hours and 2 miles to my trip but I did eventually climb out of the creek into the middle of the campground I was aiming for. Stick to the annoyingly meandering circular trails that exist and its a nice and easy, but long, day. Very excellent views of very many peaks from the top.

I started out on the Deer Creek trail head and probably took some wrong turns as I ended up north of the mountain. I ended up traversing the saddle and going up the north ridge to the summit. I was dressed as a mountaineer for Halloween. Was probably a good thing since I was on the mountain. There was plenty of snow on the east and north facing slopes with a cornice already formed on the summit ridge. It was very cold on top, or I'm not used to it yet. Probably 20 degrees with the fierce wind. I even saw 3 moose!

Brian Beckstead and I ran up from the Deer Creek Trailhead. The trail was in pretty good condition and DANG that ridge gets steeper than expected in a few spots...we resorted to power hiking much of it although we did run down the whole thing. We were just under an hour and a half up and about 50 minutes down. Sat on the summit for nearly an hour just taking in the views of Timp, the Alpine and Cottonwood ridges, and the absolute solitude. Never saw a soul on the summit trail despite it being memorial day weekend. Crazy. I took a 10 foot butt slide on the steep ridge coming down as well as a pretty monster turf about 1/2 mile from the finish...bled from just about everywhere. Let's you know you're alive!

8/20/11 - A long traverse from White Baldy. Crossed a boulder field from hell on the return back to Red Pine.

8/28/04 - Ascended south ridge then descended the north ridge. Had trouble staying on both trails. Saw 30+ mountain goats.

I've been on the summit twice, but in many, many failed attempts, I've hiked every documented trail around this mountain. Love the geology.

Not sure if the haze was pollution or smoke from the fires last week. Took 043 up from Deer Creek then on the descent took 188 down (about 0.5 miles before the saddle) then across White Canyon and connected with 044. Great to beat the afternoon heat this way as you stay in the trees and shade a lot more. Not sure if 188 is a new trail but it didn't show up on any of our maps but it was mentioned on trailhead map.

6/21/2010 From Granite Flat CG via the Deer Creek Trail #043 and the north ridge.

5/30/2010 WMC hike led by Mike Berry who forgot his ice axe and used the ice scraper/snow brush from his car along with a helmet LOL.

2/3/2009 Started from the Tibble Fork Winter TH in American Fork Canyon. Walked the snowmobiled road to the Deer Creek Trail. Stayed on the trail for awhile and then at a convenient place around 7300' dropped down to the creek bed and followed it almost to the saddle N of Box Elder. At about 9100' climbed N out of the gully and ascended to the ridge between Box Elder and White Baldy. Followed the ridge S to the summit of Box Elder.

6/23/2001 Started at Granite Flat Campground with MM. Did a loop including 10057, 10626, and Box Elder. Went up the S ridge and down the N.

Hiked this one from the Granite Flats campground area. A nice hike--really quiet, even in the summer.

Summitted this magnificent peak this morning via the Deer Cr - Dry Creek Tr. No. 043. We started around 5:15 am and reached the summit at about 9:45 am. I only know that since I took a pic with my camera phone at 9:50 am, consequently the exact same time I took pics of Lone Peak 4 days earlier. I know, Twilight Zone stuff right? I took my dog, Ginger, with me on this hike, along with my wife, and good friend. It was a little chilly near the top, and Ginger dug a hole to curl up in near the summit cairn. So if you see a freshly dug hole near the top, thank Ginger. It was an absolutely amazing hike and Box Elder offers some spectacular views of surrounding peaks.

I had the morning off work so my buddy, his wife and I decided to hike Box Elder. We started up the road from Granite Flat Campground at 5:15am and reached the summit via the northeast ridge right at 9. The views north were great, unfortunately due the the wildfire down in southern Utah, the views south and east were pretty hazy, but it was still beautiful. The huge cairn I'd heard about is now just a pile of rocks... kinda disappointing. We made it back to the truck in about 2 hours 15 minutes. Beautiful day hike!
