Bristlecone Pine (Pinus aristata)
I have heard that this species is the oldest living organism in the world.
This fine specimen here has grown for many hundreds of years on the slopes below James Peak (directly above St. Mary's Lake to the west). The exposure to the prevailing west winds greatly disfigures many of these trees. (July photo)
