Brown Snowshoe Hare

Brown Snowshoe Hare

Snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), in its brown summer coat, is fairly common on Isle Royale. Shortly after this picture, this one engaged in a nasty territorial fight with another hare, with teeth bared. Threemile, Isle Royale, August 2007.

Great catch!

I didn't realize they were so feisty. Great close up!

Re: Great catch!

Thanks. The four of us were rather stunned to see them so feisty too. Apparently a backcountry campsite (or the crumbs at least) is a prize worth defending.
