Fulfilling a Friend's Lifelong DreamStarted this climb from Rolling Creek TH at 5:20am with Ben Kiser (the dreamer) and Andrea. We cruised up to the saddle on the ridge to Buffalo Peak and let the bushwhack begin. Bushwacking was simple, but navigation got difficult when we got to the huge rocks. Many Class 3, 4, and an accidental mishap leading to a Class 5 were necessary. Lot's of fun and beautiful rocks up there. Summited right around 10:20am. 17 miles roundtrip.

Top of JeffcoI work in Jeffco so this peak has been on my list since I moved to Colorado. Started from the Rolling Creek TH around 5:20 am with my wife Andrea and Jesse Sumrak. We chose this route because we were starting so early and wanted to stay on a trail. Great trail all the way up to the saddle between Buffalo and Windy. The ridge up to Buffalo starts as an easy open woods walk then progresses into a huge rock hop/scramble midway along the ridge. That section lasts about a 1/4 mile. It is best to stay to the north of the largest rocks. After this rock scramble, it gets easier until the final pitch to the summit. Fantastic views today. Finished the hike around 2:30. 17ish miles round trip. Unfortunately, we saw the huge plume from the Calwood and Cameron Peak Fires on the drive home. Craziest smoke plume I have ever seen.

From Stony PassBushwhacked is right! We headed out to do The Castle, but the Wellington Lake operating seasons have been changed and they were already closed for the winter. We took Buffalo Peak as our consolation prize...yes, quite the bushwhack indeed, took longer than anticipated. Beautiful summit with dynamite open views!

From Stoney PassHaving lived in Jefferson County for 10 years it was time to climb its high point. The whole route involved bushwhacking and lots of deadfall. My legs were sore afterwards from stepping up and over the trees continuously while making my way up the steady incline. Today 11/8/08, I completed both summits by climbing "the Wigwam". The summit is a nice aerie in which to view all the summits south toward Pikes Peak including the high point of Douglas County, Thunder Butte.

From Rolling Creek THFantastic and long hike (15 miles & 4000 ft). The trail for the first 5 miles to the 10,600 ft saddle was easy going. It was the last 2.5 miles and 1000 ft that made it interesting. Over all a great hike with amazing views from the top. I was tempted to head over to Windy for an even longer hike but decided to save it for another day.

Ascent: Western Ridge - Descent southeast slopeBoy am I tired! Nice hike, but one of the most difficult I have done. Hiked up Wigman Trail to Rolling Creek Trail, which by the way isn't the most obvious trail, and then headed east along the ridge to Buffalo's summit. Beautiful views, but rather sobering when you look out upon Hayman fire burn area to the southeast. From the summit I headed down to the saddle between Buffalo and Wigmam but decided to save Wigmam for another day. Four hours 25 minutes to the summit, and 7 hours total round trip.

BushWACKYHiked them both separately. West route descent off of Wigwam is one of the coolest things I've ever done - like glissading in 1-2' deep decomposed granite. Awesome!

Northeast slopeNot a long hike, but different. In the trees all day, with lots of fallen trees. Easy to get lost on descent unless you keep the big ridge on the opposite side of Stoney Pass in front of you. Summit view is quite good in all directions. Climbed with Ron, Chris.

Route Climbed: Northeast Slopes Date Climbed: June 26, 2005Climbed this peak from the Stoney Pass Trailhead. A difficult peak to attain, not due to length or grade, but due to the dead and fallen trees that cover the traverse. We were probably only out of the trees for 30 minutes of an all day hike. Make sure you bring your map, compass, and GPS, or this could turn into a longer day than necessary.

Route Climbed: Northeast Slopes Date Climbed: November 8, 2003We climbed the direct route from Stoney Pass. There's some nice outcrops along the way, but it's nowhere near as impressive as the south slopes that Kane describes. Bring a map and compass for this one!
