OverviewDO NOT VOTESwede Mountain lies just to the southeast of Libby, Montana. Libby is a charming, logging and mining town and exemplifies small-town Montana and is an excellent jumping-off place to explore the absolutely magnificent peaks of the Cabinets, particularly the rugged peaks of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness.
The jaw-dropping views of the Cabinets provided by Swede Mountain and it's accompanying lookout will only serve to whet your appetite for further adventures in this spectacular portion of Northwest Montana.

Getting There Gate...1.5 miles from summit From Kalispell drive west on Hwy 2 for approximately 84.4 miles to Route 482. Turn right here. Drive south on 482 for 2.91 miles to Swede Mountain Road (#533). Turn left and drive on pavement for 2.57 miles and then another .5 miles on dirt/gravel to the first turnout off of #533, un-marked #533-F, located on the left side of the road. Park here if you want the most challenging hike or you can drive up the mountain to within 1.5 miles of the summit to a closed gate, or there are several options in between. From Kalispell, you can also look for short-cuts from Hwy 2 to Route 482 as they parallel each other for several miles.
From Libby, Montana drive east on Hwy 2 for 2.55 miles and then turn left on Route 482. The rest of the directions are the same as above.Route Information
This is a straightforward forest service road hike up the mountain to the summit. As stated earlier, you have several options from parking at the bottom to the gate 1.5 miles from the summit, and several in between. Hike or drive up #533 til you see the sign for the lookout and #4674. Head left at the sign and take the left fork in the road. If you drove to this point, the gate and a parking area are just a moment away.
Lower on #533, you have many tantalizing views of the higher peaks of the Cabinets, such as Treasure Mountain...pictured below.

Camping and RedTape Swede Mountain is located in the Kootenai National Forest which is bear country. Don't hike alone, make noise as you hike, and carry bear spray and know how to use it. We saw no bear sign on Swede Mountain, but the Cabinet Mountains are chock full of healthy-sized black bears and the occasional grizzly.

There is no water available on this hike. A map of the Kootenai National Forest and the Libby Ranger District is helpful in negotiating the many Forest Service Roads. Bug repellent is an absolute necessity in Montana in June, July and August. No ticks were seen on this hike.
The closest campground is Howard Lake Campground, located several miles to the southwest.
