The only trail to the top of Mt Tom is a half-mile spur trail off the A-Z trail. If you're weighted down with gear, it's very tempting to stash your backpack near the trail intersection and pick it up on the way back down. If you do, take your food with you! If the squirrels, chipmunks and mice don't get it, a pine marten will happily take a break from hunting those rodents and feast on whatever you've brought. Nylon backpack fabric is no obstacle!
