Good fun for an Oregonian!  Sucess!

This was a pretty fun little hike. Went up the 'easy' Cholla Trail way. No problem for an out of towner like me from Oregon. It was nice not to have to push through a snow pack or mud and rain. Or scramble across cold wet rocks. I'll do it again.

camelback

The first of several hikes to the top of Camelback, the Phoenician's local equivalent to the Empire State Building. Beautiful views of the desert and a bird's eye view of the city. Classic "man vs. nature" stuff here. Lots of fun!

Another favorite from my childhood  Sucess!

I climbed Camelback two or three times with my dad in the mid-80s. I remember enjoying the long hike (at least it felt long to an 8 year old), and the sections of rock slab that made for some fun climbing. I actually did my first bouldering at Camelback as well.

The climb is longer than it looks. I've never seen so many people on one trail. It seemed like a lot of students from ASU, tourists, and trophy wives from Scottsdale use the mountain as a stairmaster.

Did the loop over and around the mountain - about 6 or 7 miles; doesn't take too long. Beautiful day, but a bit crowded. Also spent some time climbing Bobby's Rock.

Good little workout. Can do it in 45 minutes. Great view from the top. Best to hit it at 6 - 7 am before it gets too hot.

First time up, noticed it from office window on my last trip and wanted to see the veiw from the top. Lots of foot traffic today considering it was 97 degrees out but I guess that is a cold spell for AZ. Flew in from NJ that morning where it was 62 when I left but the dry heat was fine with enough water to keep hydrated on this short, steep hike. Loved some of the scrambling towards the top. Trails are somewhat ambiguous in places and made an unexpected detour around Praying Monk before pulling out a GPS and seeing the error. Amazing the amount of wildlife on the way up, got to say hello to a dozen lizards. View from the top is amazing.

Route Climbed: Echo Canyon always Date Climbed: A lot!  Sucess!

My favorite hike in the Phoenix area. Try to hike it once a week in the winter. Often crowded. More a chance to get a work out than anything, but still a great hike all around. I never grow tired of it. The scenery is often amazing - including that of the city below :).

Hiked the west-side Echo Canyon Trail exclusively until about 2010, then Cholla Trail on the east side while they were refurbishing the Echo Canyon side, then finally hiked it from the west side recently (Dec 14) along the newer trail.

My usual time up is about 40 minutes, then 30 down. Once did it in an hour flat. Have hiked it in summer a couple times. Then I grew a brain.

Climbed it with a friend, the summit is nice and flat and inviting, unlike Squaw Peak. It is a little much with the rocks and all, but great views of the entire city and indian reservation. Hey, I even saw my dorm at ASU from there...

Wow, talk about different hiking than Idaho. Talk about people, I passed nearly 68 people going up and down (yes I counted) and had to wait for a parking spot. It was 95 degrees which nearly killed me yet everyone I talked to said it was perfect....

Well, anyway, beautiful little mountain, and a fun hike. You can make it even a little techinical if you dont use the hand rails which I almost made a game out of.

A nice little blast up this hill, doesn't take much time and it's a decent workout but of course, very crowded. A guy should hike this every morning before work.

Made it to the top in less than an hour with my girlfriend's sister. It was a tons of fun. The brief scramble up sections above the saddle was excellent. We saw a woman hiking with a giant parrot...it climbed up a rock with its beak. Damn, unbelievable.

We saw a few with bad trail etiquette. Not surprising at all though given the total amount of people out there.

I have summited Camelback many times, mainly from the Echo Canyon Trail. I think Echo Canyon is a more difficult trail and a better work out but I prefer the Cholla Trail because of the views of the city along the ridgeline to the summit. The summit is an excellent place to view a sunrise.

Climbed this one every time I've been in Phoenix, usually several times in a few days. Great break from work and a good workout. Had it (almost) to myself once on a 109 degree day! Those Arizonans are tough!

I'm one of those 5 times a week guys. Best place to watch a sunset in Phoenix is from the top of Camelback, and I try to catch it everyday after work. Good thing we get more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Lots of people on the trail, but I really enjoy the company. Gone to the top probably thousands of times, but I've never once regretted going.

The heat finally broke in Phoenix this past weekend and its was perfect weather for Camelback. 75 Degrees and sunny...My first time back to the mountain in six months. The trail had the usual cast of characters - out of towners, guys carrying 6 month olds in baby carriers (I even saw another guy literally carrying his 7 or 8 year old son up a steep section on his back) plus the usual camelback 5 time a week crew. That being said, the trail was not overly crowded like it will be later in the year and it was a very pleasant hike to the top. Highly recommended - go now b4 it gets too crowded!

Route Climbed: every time up Echo Cyn... once from the east side Date Climbed: Hundred times+  Sucess!

My favorite hike and my main means of keeping fit. Yes it's crowded... people talking on cell phones... major meat market... people smoking while hiking... out-of-towners clearly in over their heads... people wearing Keds sneakers... but it's a blast. On a clear day one can pick out peaks as far south as Picacho near Tucson.
