Overview Kane Creek is rich and famous for it's Wall Climb's, BASE Jumping and 4WD Festival's. Jimmy Dunn, Charlie Fowler, Kevin Chase et.al. put up some very stiff and challenging Aid and Free/Trad Routes in this canyon, which is located about three miles, as the Crow fly's, southwest of Moab. It is on BLM land and the views are spectacular. Dean Potter worked on Playing Hookie for two seasons and finally in 2002, freed the very thin, 1/4"-1/2" very thin Crux of the 4th pitch at 5.13a. Rick Poedtke, Solo/Clean Aided the inspiring and stiff Deep Voodoo in March of 1999 at C3+. The best time of the year to play on the Tombstones are Spring and Fall. It can get warm in the Summer. The south facing area can be enjoyed in Winter but it can get chilly.
RECOMMENDED ROUTES:
-Kane Cutter III A3+/5.10+
-Deep Voodoo III C3+
-Corner Route III 5.12
-Playing Hookie III 5.13a/C2
-For Desert Rats Only III 5.11Getting There From Moab, turn onto Kane Creek Dr., next to the McDonalds and follow the paved road for 4.8 miles then go past Moonflower Cnyn until the pavement ends. After the cattle gaurd, go up the canyon about a half mile or so and there will be a slight widening of the dirt road with a nice flat rock to lay on and scope out the lines of the Tombstones which lay above and to your left. When you park, ensure that you get off the road and keep your windows rolled up as the traffic of 4WDer's will raise tons of dust.Red Tape Cleaning P-2 of the Hookey. | Me, Soloing Play'n Hookey (P-2). None as this is BLM LAND. Be observant for the occassional BASE Jumper that will "POP" right over your head if on "Playing Hookey"!
Camping Getting to Voodoo and the Corner Route heads directly above. There are several areas on the River that are established BLM Camping Areas. You can Bivy on the flat area about 1/2 up the road but stay in your vehicle. The folks at Pagan Mountaineering in town are great and will supply you with all the current beta and gear that you may need.
