Capu a u Tozzu is located in the heart of Corsica near the town of Calacuccia and the Col de Vergio. It is a very easy ascent (hiking with no hands needed) of about 3h. You will pass by the Lac de Nino (Nino Lake) known for its beautiful setting and its "Pozzi" (swampy ponds).
Once you've reached the top, you will enjoy the view on some of the nicest summits of Corsica : Monte Cintu, Paglia Orba and Capu Tafunatu.
Capu a u Tozzu can be climbed all year long, yet there will be snow in winter. Snowshoes will be therefore recommandable. In summer, there can be quite a lot of people as it is a popular hike, but the last part after the lake to reach the summit will be much quieter.
This summit is part of the Parc Naturel de Corse (Natural Park of Corsica), as a consequence people must not camp, or leave rubbish behind them.
Here is another mountain of Corsica I added on SP : Punta d'Ortu
Getting There and Staying
The best solution would be to have your own car as this central part of Corsica doesn't have public transportation.
From Porto (44 kms) :
Take road D84 (in the East direction) up to Col de Vergio (34 kms).
Then carry on the same road to reach the Ferme de Poppaghia (10 kms). There is a car park with good indication where the trail starts.
From Corte (44 kms) :
Take road D18 (in the North direction) up to Pont de Castirla (15 kms).
Then west, on road D84 through the gorges of Scala de Santa Regina up to the Calacuccia lake (15 kms).
Carry on the same road to reach the Ferme de Poppaghia (14 kms).
To sleep :

Gite Albertini (20 bunk beds)

For food shopping, you can either buy what you need before leaving Porto or Corte (depending from you arrive) or there is small supermarket in Calacuccia.
Ascent of Capu a u Tozzu - South ridge
The trail starts at the Ferme de Poppaghia at 1076m. It has yellow marks along the way, up to Lac de Nino.
It first goes left up hill and then follows the bottom of the Colga valley.
After an hour walking in the woods, at about 1400m, you will enter a large landscape with mainly rocks and no trees. Keep following the yellow marks on rocks to hike up to the pass of Bocca a Stazzona (1762m). This ends the first part of the ascent as you reach the Lac de Nino (2h from Poppaghia).
Go around the lake clockwise to reach the GR20 trail and then hike up west following the red & white marks. After 20-30 minutes you will at the pass of Bocca a Reta (1883m). The ultimate part is on the South ridge of Capu a u Tozzu to get up to the summit at 2007m (15-20 minutes from the pass).
The descent can be done the same way, or following the GR20 more west and then turn right on the trail "Ronde du Val de Niellu" to go back to the Colga valley.
As the sun can be strong, where a hat and sun cream as the ascent is 3h long. In winter you will need warm equipment despite the low altitude, as snow storm can occur on the mountains of Corsica due to the closeness of the Mediterranean sea.
The most accurate is the IGN Top 25 with a 1:25.000 scale.
