Opening Day '07  Sucess!

My first hike of the year. I know real late in the year to be starting out, but a fella has got bills to pay! Some snow still sticking around, so it made nice scenery. It was crazy windy on the top. Enough to push you around, and make you crouch real low at times. I just basically ran up there to the benchmark, and then got the hell out of town.

Lovely, plenty of snow on the way up  Sucess!

Upstate New York is a very pleasant surprise. Lovely. Rugged.

Great Short Hike  Sucess!

This is a nice easy hike from the road. It gets kind of steep and eroded in the mid-section. But nice views can be had from the summit. I've had very nice as well as very limited (less than 15m) views from this peak.

Great climb a little harsh on the feet though at the time. Great view of Whiteface and the surrounding mountains. Lol should have took more water instead of soda!! Great climb.

Nice easy climb which accounts for the 40 odd people on the summit...

Very First 46er  Sucess!

Where it all started in the 'dacks. I was probably about 7 years old when we did Cascade and Porter and 10 years later after finishing up the 46ers was visited again to see where it all began.

Cascade Mt. Sept. 2005  Sucess!

A great hike that my 4 year old son loved (me too)! Lots of rocks to climb over and jump on and a big old tree that was hollowed out at the bottom which made a really neat picture with my son sitting in the tree. The trail is a mix of even ground, gradual uphill climbs, and a few steep sections. Nothing that requires special equipment or anything during summer or fall. A very good day hike, took us about 4 hours round trip, and that includes playing around along the way.
It was VERY windy at the top the day we climbed, so we didn't go all the way to the summit, as the wind was too much for my son. Had a blast and got some great pictures along the way. Views are very good from anywhere near the summit. A great place to hang out for a while, enjoy the scenery and relax. Also to let kids play around and climb...supervised, of course.
There are a few climbing areas that can be slippery further up, but not too bad. Just have to be careful.ENJOY!
...This was the second time I climbed Cascade Mt. First time was early July 2005 and there was almost no visibillity, but still a great hike.

Cascade in Febrary  Sucess!

Camped about 30 minutes hike from the road on Friday night. The trail was pretty muddy for the first 45 minutes, then started icing up for the rest of the trail. Tagged Cascade and continued to Porter as well.

Not bad weather on the way up ~ great hiking! Clouds rolled in while on the summit but still had some nice views before the sky opened up. One of my favorite High Peaks.

Snow from trailhead to summit. Barebooted to top, no postholing perfect packed snow. First nice day of the year, clear skies. Always a fresh feel hiking in the Adirondacks in winter.

This was my very first High Peak, I accomplished it with the help of my friend Ethan Stansbury, and his dog Porter. The Weather didnt allow for any good vistas from any portion of the trip, however it did create a beautiful mist that surrounded us from all sides. At Summit we were actually standing in the middle of the clouds! I would say that visibility was at around 40%. The Trail Conditions were A little muddy and then turned to Ice and mud nearer the summit. I would highly reccommend this climb for any beginners. Even as my first High Peak, With the bad weather factored in, the summit was easily reached.

This was both my buddy Alan Meachum's and my 4 month old Chocolate Lab Porter's first High Peak. Checked the weather in the morning, chance of rain 30%... seems to be pretty good odds, we'll do it. HA! About 20 minutes into the hike the drizzle/rain started and didn't let up until we were basically in the clouds! For their first High Peak the views were non-existant, but still an awesome experience non the less! It was actually kinda eerie, not being able to see anything around us, but knowing that we were so far up with other peaks all around us!

We bagged Porter next... had to let my pup climb the peak he was named after first time out!

It started out in the high 50s that morning, but the summit of Cascade was wrought with high winds and freezing temperatures. Good reminder to be prepared when climbing in the High Peaks. Regardless, it was a fairly clear day and the views were magnificent.
