Cave Entrance, Mammoth Cave NP | [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
Mammoth Cave is believed to be the world's largest cave. It lies in Kentucky's karst region, with lots of caves that may or may not be connected to one another somehow.
The other cave entrances I've seen in Mammoth Cave NP are gated off. This one, marked #205 by the Department of the Interior, was very much open. It is easily visible from a stream crossing on the Sal Hollow Trail, about a quarter mile east of Sal Hallow. I don't know whether it connects up with the main cave, or with any other.
A look inside the cave entrance is here.
It is against park regulations to enter a cave without a permit.

Hasn't voted | The park website is http://www.nps.gov/maca.
It's set up to sell guided cave tours, and doesn't have information about non-guided trails. To get information about a permit, you'll have to contact the park staff directly. | | Posted Nov 12, 2008 5:50 am |

Hasn't voted | I have pics of the inside of this cave listed in my SP gallery. It's fairly level, has a stream down the middle of it.
Never more than about 3ft in height, it goes about 12ft straight back into the hill, then makes a sharp right and continues for about 40ft. It terminates in a room big enough to sit upright in. Requires a belly crawl over a rocky mud slump.
There is a second passage, which is on the right, immediately inside the entrance. It reconnects with the main passagem though.
Watch out for critters, especially in the winter. | | Posted Nov 21, 2008 12:30 pm |

Hasn't voted | Is it this one?
Maybe you could create an album of your shots and attach it to the main MCNP page.

Hasn't voted | At the moment, all of my cave shots hosted on here are of that cave, though I plan to expand.
Would this one bee a valued addition?

Hasn't voted | Sure, link them all!
The MCNP official site is useless for wild caving, so any info you have would be great. If not SP, where? | | Posted Nov 21, 2008 3:02 pm |
