Hasn't voted | This one certainly gets around... a bit promiscuous really. But it is 19 ounces and that is good enough for me. | | Posted Aug 23, 2011 5:11 pm |

Voted 10/10 | What? 19 ounces? Is it a Black Diamond tent? If not, what brand is it and how many people does it sleep? Does it have a bottom? I doubt it.
Sorry Chad, too may questions. Very curious! | | Posted Aug 23, 2011 7:13 pm |
 | | mrchad9 | Re: this tent.. | |
Hasn't voted | Yeah. It is a Black Diamond Bata Light. Best purchase I have made in the last 5 years. Floorless, sleeps two. And is roomier than my previous 2-person 4 pound tent. They have a four person version as well that weighs about 2 pounds. Both use your walking sticks for poles. I usually bring a groundcloth, when I am solo just a tarp that weighs a couple ounces that barely fits the sleeping pad. Does good in the snow too, and makes carrying your pack to a summit or on a traverse MUCH more feasible.
Largely because of this tent, after my last backpacking trip my pack weighed in at 12.76 pounds. Not bad for a three day trip considering I had an extra pound of food left over. | | Posted Aug 23, 2011 7:28 pm |

Voted 10/10 | I'm impressed, very impressed, not so much by the 19 oz tent but by your 12.76 pound pack after a three day trip.
I used to travel light, but never this light.
Thank you for the detailed response. | | Posted Aug 23, 2011 10:57 pm |

Hasn't voted | How does it hold up in 80+mph winds and a 24 hour downpour of upwards of 8-10" of rain? | | Posted Aug 24, 2011 1:47 am |
 | | mrchad9 | Re: this tent.. | |
Hasn't voted | No problem Marc, happy to provide information. I've learned to do it quite confortably too. There are folks that travel much lighter than me, but I am close to my limit now. Doing more requires giving up a lot at this point. | | Posted Aug 24, 2011 2:34 am |
 | | mrchad9 | Re: this tent.. | |
Hasn't voted | I've had it in some pretty stong winds, snow, and hail in it. But 80+mph and 8-10" rain would be far too much. I live in California though, no such worries here. | | Posted Aug 24, 2011 2:36 am |

Hasn't voted | No such worries in CA?
Apparently you stay home and do not go out in the Sierra when the weather decides to shit itself or in the Winter. We lost three BD four season tents to 90+mph winds alone in one Whitney outting this past April and almost lost two more in early June at UBSL due to 80+ mph winds. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 2:21 am |
 | | mrchad9 | Re: this tent.. | |
Hasn't voted | It may surprise you to know that I have more than one tent... five actually.
When you have good paying job like I do and aren't living hand to mouth on a small pension you can afford to get the best gear for the specific conditions you will encounter.
Because of my unique sitution I am not forced to compromise and bring a BD four season tent on a trip out of Kearsarge Pass in July.
Nor do I need to spout inflated numbers to make myself feel better about trips to Whitney that were apparently executed extremely poorly. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 2:32 am |
 | | The Chief | Re: this tent.. | |
Hasn't voted | There were 27 different parties (39 people total) that were rescued over a 36 hour period in the Whitney Region this past July when the Southern monsoonal flow triggered TSers that dropped over 11 inches of rain in a 48 period, washed out and completely closed most portions of both the SF & NF WhtenyTrails. Not my numbers mind you, those are from USFS, NOAA, Inyo, SEKI and China Lake SAR entities. You can also read all about the events on the Whitney Portal Store web page.
This season alone there have been over 62 different SAR's throughout the Sierra due to individuals being totally ill prepared for weather that people never conceived would occur in California from June through September.
That same system contributed to the 15 different SAR's throughout the "Valley" Walls that same period due to teams being ill prepared for the weather. They too thought as you do, it's California. Nothing like that would ever happen here in July. One can also look up at the death stats on El Cap for the past 35 years and one will find that more have died due to succumbing to the weather in July through Sept than any other reason. They were also ill prepared for what the California Summer weather can in fact dish out.
Those BD Four Season tents that were shredded and blown to bits, they were not set up by me, but by a two time Everest, 12 time Aconcagua, 5 time Denali, 24 time Kili and 119 time Rainier Summitted AMGA/UIAGM Alpine Guide/Instructor/Evaluator. I will be sure to let him how his poor experience in tent set up were the main contributor to the tents demise. You can verify those numbers here...

Voted 10/10 | I thought this kind of stuff was not tolerated on the content side of Summit Post? No one cares - there is Private Messaging for a reason. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 10:22 am |

Hasn't voted | Just letting folks know that California Summers do in fact have weather that can and will kill you if you are not prepared for it.
Unfortunately, far too many these days do not care as you posted above nor understand that fact and then end up needing to get their asses rescued. Putting the lives of the SAR techs in jeopardy. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 10:30 am |

Hasn't voted | I understand The Chief's point of view (i.e. trolling, harassment, and stalking on the content side of SP).
Though how he thinks someone could set up a BD BetaLight (or a BD 4 season tent) on the side of El Cap is beyond me. Or perhaps he was just bringing in an irrelevant topic.
And his words:
"We lost three BD four season tents...almost lost two more in early June "
"individuals being totally ill prepared for weather"
Sounds like he was one of those individuals who was totally ill prepared for the weather encountered. It is unfortunate someone working for a guide service cannot manage a trip properly or even check the forecast beforehand.
Hey sport, check out this site... sounds like you could use it.

Hasn't voted | Wrong again. The irony of this entire exchange will truly be when I am called in as a member of the Inyo County SAR Team and it is you that I am plucking out.
Your narcissistic ego centered demeaning "I make big bucks" attitude is the exact same as many of those that I have assisted in plucking out (SAR Ops), alive and dead, in the past 30 some years.
BTW, nice staged PHOTOSHOPPED picture.
Over and out. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 1:01 pm |

Hasn't voted | The photo isn't photoshopped in any way, not cropped, color enhanced, or anything.
Note that I have been going into the mountains for years, am prepared for what I encounter, and have never needed a rescue or recovery for me or anyone else in my team.
The Chief on the other hand cannot truthfully make that statement. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 1:11 pm |

Voted 10/10 | how is this photoshopped? maybe some of those over saturated pics that make photo-of-the-day all the time, but this one looks like it came straight off the camera and on to this site. quit hating, Chiefy. | | Posted Sep 8, 2011 10:36 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks. I've become obsessive about finding scenic camping spots, and this has been one of my favorites. No mosquitos either. | | Posted Aug 23, 2011 8:28 pm |
| lcarreau | Cool tent .. | |
Voted 10/10 | Looks like you were getting a nice breeze
blowing across the lake.
I used to use a Eureka tent that could
(withstand) some stiff winds, but I live in AZ, where the weather is quite tame and what few natural lakes they have are completely
covered with skeeters this time of the year.
I bet 'Paddles' was really having a joyous
time at this secluded location.
