I know this is only 19 degrees North but I didn't expect to see that kind of a forest at 3850 m. Is this typical of peaks around Mexico City including the 5000 m volcanos?

Crazy enough yes.. to find forests or small bands of trees up to and even above the 4000m mark is common on all of the major peaks.
