Chacaltaya

Chacaltaya

Less than 15 years ago Chacaltaya held the record for being the highest ski resort on earth. The glacier has now receded and the resort has been abandoned. This building was the chair lift.

I wish that "super-volcano"

in Yellowstone would hurry up and blow, so we
can enjoy some "global cooling" as the ash
cloud settles in and wraps around the planet.

Just kidding ...

About the ski lift

I skied on the Chacaltaya glacier in April 1973. A mountain guide lent me his equipment. The ski lift was on the glacier itself.
The cable of the ski lift was driven by a Ford V8 motor mounted on a chassis of truck, through a wheel rim.
The building is the refuge of the Club Andino Boliviano.
I kept the skilift ticket: http://gucski.free.fr/siteGUCski/Chacaltaya.html
