This was one of the best trips up the mountain that I've ever been on! I got started really late today (about noon), so I decided to turn a dayhike into an overnight. I'll use any excuse to make it an overnight! But anyway, the weather was absolutely gorgeous with a little sun and a little breeze. I hiked up Trail Canyon, which meets up with the North Loop Trail after two miles of straight-forward uphill hiking. After the junction, the trail becomes easier, letting you enjoy the scenery.

I continue up the NL for a while staring at my goal, off in the distance. It always amazes me how far away the summit looks from some parts of the trail.

Along this section of the trail you begin to cross some cliffs and chutes with minimal exposure.

I continued on through some of the cliffs and chutes until I arrived at a favorite spot to camp. I set up my tent, heated up some soup, and sat, drinking my Kool-Aid and enjoying the view.

I read a little bit, but mostly stared off into the distance for what seemed to be hours (in fact, it was!).It started to ge a little chilly so I went to bed at about nine, hoping to get an early start towards the summit.

I got up and packed up by six, ate a few granola bars, drank some coffee, and off I went.

I hiked for what seemed to be longer than it probably was, and finally made it to the summit cone.

The rest of the way is always easy because you know that you're almost there. The cone is moderately exposed (a slip could be ugly), but more tedious than anything. After fifteen or twenty minutes, the weather station, antenna, and various anchor points become visible......and there you are!
