Happy New Year  Sucess!

What better way to bring in the New Year than to take a nice day hike. I remember really enjoying being able to hike without 'post-holing' through deep snow in Jan. I had moved to NC from MT just a couple months before this hike. The trail cruises through spruce/fir forest which reminded of MT. It's nice to have a little of bit of the old with the new!

First Smokies hike  Sucess!

Good easy day hike - fall colors just barely still hanging on. Good one to do for my first time in the Smokies.

Whoa that's a long way down...  Sucess!

The title gives my impression of where my hubby scrambled to. I wouldn't get on the main rock because of a dizzy spell. Gotta remember to NOT look down.

AT from Newfound Gap  Sucess!

A nice, wet, hike in the woods. First "climbing" trip east of the Mississippi. Six inches of wet, heavy snow fell the night before we climbed via the A.T. Headed north and ambled over the summit of Mt. Ambler, passed nearby Kephart, and over "Masa Knob" just before arriving at the Bunion. A fun day. Met several "Through Hikers" which was great.

AT  Sucess!

It was great to hike this with my dad and it was much better than I expected. A great view and very little effort. Do I have to go back to Gatlinburg now?

Great hike  Sucess!

This is a great dayhike along the AT from Newfound Gap. Also serves as a good trail run along this stretch of AT since there are no major sustained climbs or descents -- very runnable.

snowy AT  Sucess!

surprised with the snowy/icy AT around 6000 feet. it was beautiful with the weird, snow covered branches on only one side.

gorgeous day in the smokies.

Smokies Classic  Sucess!

This was a really great hike since it was my first real winter hike with snow and ice (growing up in FL gave me a fascination with snow and mountains). There were many portions of the trail that were like an ice luge. We had brought yacktrax, and even though they weren't as secure on the ice as the instep crampons we saw another hiker wearing, they got the job done-- nervously. The view was breathtaking as well.

Appalachian Trail  Sucess!

Hiked up here in the snow with some good friends, one of whom suffered from hypothermia on the second day of the trip.

Crossed it while on the AT. I think my friend lost some custom photography equipment here ;)

Views galore  Sucess!

Besides almost breaking my neck on the downslope trail from Ice Water Springs (ICE is the keyword), the slip 'n slide walking was worth the fantastic views from the Bunion.

Route: AT Trail from Newfound Gap  Sucess!

It was a nice easy walk, beautiful views especially in the fall due to the leaves changing colors.

AT  Sucess!

Nice views. IF you come in the winter it will not be what many people would expect in the south. Watch the trail and rocks if iced over it can be dicy. I went cross country in the area near Kephart prong and saw fresh bear tracks in December. Neat place.

Route Climbed: A.T. Date Climbed: Feb 7, 2005  Sucess!

Climbed solo on my birthday in conjunction with Kephart and LeConte. Started at Newfound Gap and used Boulevard and AT. Quite a bit of snow on the trail and did not see a soul the entire day, extremely rare for the Smokies. As a bonus, saw 3 elk while driving out of the park towards Cherokee. A most excellent birthday.
