This is actually the most accessible high point from Atlanta, and is one of the best ones in the region. I've done a lot of trips to the North Georgia Mountains, but was pleasantly suprised by the "Alabama Alps" with the scenic parkway (a diminuitive blue Ridge parkway). Be careful when hiking here in the late spring/summer. Although the terrain feels a lot like North Georgia, the elevations are significantly lower and it can get very hot, especially if you are trying the Lake Trail approach, which I highly recommend.

A large party of us hiked this gruelling death march from the base of Mt Cheaha.
The weather was cold and damp/drizzly. The trails for the most part were good but this is an extremely difficult hike. Just because this mountain is at the southern terminous of the Appalachian Mts. in Alabama does not make it easy if you choose this route.

About 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta. Toughest part of the summit was finding a gas station on I-20 as we passed into Alabama. Almost had to start walking!
