huskertriguyCompletion of the Southern Six-Pack  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 21, 2012

The last of my bid through the Southern Six-Pack, and perhaps the most rewarding.

Parked at the Clingmans Dome lot, took the bypass to the AT, hiked to Silers Bald and back. (This was on a ranger's recommendation as an alternative to my original plan to hike from Newfound Gap. Glad I took it; great views & ridgeline hiking.)

I didn't see a soul on the entire AT until back within a mile of Clingmans. Magnificent. This was a relatively easy ridgeline hike. I took about 3.5 hours, including a 15-minute nap atop Silers and another 15 minutes on the summit of Clingmans.

Hiked in from the Newfound Gap parking lot. Took about three hours each way, with thunderstorms and driving rain. The police were searching for a Chinese kid who went missing from the summit area.

Would have liked to have done a longer hike, but after getting blistered feet the day before on Mount Mitchell, I decided the 0.5 mile paved path sounded excellent. Clear weather and nice views on top for sure.

After spending 20 minutes circling the parking lot for a space, we raced up in the rain as a thunderstorm was rolling in. And had fun doing it.

Hiked up for an overnight from Husky Gap. Beautiful fall foliage in the Smokies that time of year.

It was really foggy and chilly, but we made a quick jaunt up to the summit via the paved tourist trail. Zero views.

This was the second time that my hiking and HP buddy, Mike, and I have visited Clingmans Dome (first time was in 1994?). With the increase of technology (digital cameras, etc.), we basically decided to redo and document the 18 HP's we had already completed along the east coast. The disposable camera/photos just didn't cut it. Views from the atop the observation tower were enshrouded with clouds. Though, the views from the parking lot were outstanding.

Drove up then, then walked up in shorts and sandals. Felt like a cheat driving up rather than hiking but I was rushed for time. Will have to revisit to truly climb this.

First of a 6 state HP weekend. Flew into Knoxville, then hit the HPs for TN, GA, SC, NC, KY and VA. This is my 40th state HP. I enjoyed the drive and short hike to the summit.

Started from the big parking lot at Newfound Gap and took about two and a half hours to summit. Trail was deserted but peak was crawling with tourists. Making my way back at dusk I was accosted by a dude at the last parking lot before getting back that a bear had just been seen just a few feet from where I had just emerged from the trail. I didn't feel like being an appetizer so my benefactor was good enough to give me a lift back to NFG so I weaseled out of the last 1.8 miles.
