Short on time, so I drove most of the way up. Views were disappointing, so
I drove over to nearby Red Horse Mountain, which yielded much better views.

No view at the summit, and the trail was filled with mountain bikers (I think I saw twenty or so people and we were the only two hiking), but nonetheless a pretty trail for early fall and a pleasant enough dayhike in terms of elevation gain and distance.

Went up trail 257, which is most certainly open to bikes. Took forest road the rest of the way up. Encountered a lot of snow near the top.

I went with my dad and 6 year old son, we drove to the viewpoint and then followed the trail the last 900' to the top. Not a lot to see but still a mountain. I plan on climbing it again from the bottom to get some more elevation gain.

This mountain is home to me. I have lived at the base of it my whole life. The top is flat and offers no view, but the mountain has many other features. There are good views of Lake Cd'A from FR 439 and trails lead to the top from the north and south, which are great places to hike all year round. The road is great for snowshoeing and x-country skiing. I love this place and it gave me a great place to hang out as a kid as well as now. As a matter of fact I'm taking my dog up there right now.

I hiked the entire 10-mile-roundtrip trail today. There was no more snow anywhere on top; friends hiking there 3 weeks ago saw 4'-deep snowdrifts in places. With my chainsaw, I cut 34 ea. fallen logs that were crossing the trail. Two mountain bikers heading downhill appreciated my efforts to keep the trail maintained. Occasional views can be seen through the trees of Lake Coeur d'Alene and the snow-capped mountains east along the Idaho-Montana border. This is a moderately-strenuous hike that is great for getting oneself in shape for the hiking season. It took me 4 hours to get up to the summit, and 2 hours to get down (with my chainsaw in tow).
