Route Climbed: Straight up from the parking area Date Climbed: March 21, 2005  Sucess!

My buddy Lee and I arrived in Colorado on Saturday the 20th from Cincinnati. The very next day we headed to Berthoud Pass to bag a summit (whatever looked good). Little did we know that after tagging the summit, hanging around for a bit and taking pictures, a swift moving blizzard would blow in and blind us on decent.

Luckily we ran into a local snowboarder who was riding it out and he pointed us in the right directions. Hell of a time!!

Route Climbed: Fall River TH Date Climbed: 13 July 2005  Sucess!

After my wife, Katie, and I had hiked Bancroft, Parry and Eva, she descended the Chinn's Lake basin back to Fall River and I continued on to Flora. Great summit with no one to be seen. I also climbed Witter on the way back to the TH.

Route Climbed: Witter-Flora traverse Date Climbed: October 26 2003  Sucess!

Nice peak after a good climb up witter. Had a little land slide issue when decending down the skree field down to Ethel lake. My first time seeing those white game birds (still cant remember the name). Got really close to some big horn sheep.

Route Climbed: Mt. Flora's Southwest Ridge from Berthoud Pass Date Climbed: May 23, 1987  Sucess!

The divide socked in as we rushed from the summit. We were pelted with corn-snow and rushed back below the ridge on the western slopes, through some snowfields, to avoid the lightning potential on top of the ridge.

Route Climbed: Southeast Ridge from Berthoud Date Climbed: November 27, 2004  Sucess!

My wife and I decided to drive up and see how the conditions looked. It turned out to be a great hike to the summit of Colorado Mines on awesome snow. The views were limited to almost nothing and we decided to forgo Flora until another day. Winds were high and cold.

Route Climbed: Berthoud Pass Date Climbed: June 25, 2004  Sucess!

I climbed Mt Flora first, then bagged Mines on the way back to the pass. The weather looked a little threatening, but all we got were a few scads of fluffy hail.

I am still not sure I reached the true summit of Flora. I went as far as the summit where the trail descends towards Breckenridge Peak. This summit is shown as Mt Flora on the maps (unless I'm reading it wrong), but there is a point on the ridge to the northeast that definitely looks higher. I wanted to go over that way, just in case, but the weather didn't look very good.

very nice alpine ridge walk - great to do probably any time of year depending on your tolerance for wind and cold.

Colorado Mines  Sucess!

September 24 2023

I had a lot to do today so couldn't do anything overly ambitious so I climbed Colorado Mines Peak. It was a nice day and not as windy as yesterday.

August 31 2023

On a nice evening, I climbed Colorado Mines Peak.

June 23 2023

After work, I headed towards Rollins Pass in hopes of climbing Heartbeat Peak, but the road was gated too long from the trailhead and I knew I would make it. I then headed for Colorado Mines Peak. The late start, soft snow, and lack of desire to get back after midnight prompted a turn around about half way up.

May 17 2023

After work, I attempted to climb Colorado Mines Peak, but the snow conditions were very poor and I ended up breaking my ski pole. I only made it about half way up before turning back.

May 1 2023

After a long and rather frustrating day at work, I decided to climb Colorado Mines Peak. I started around sunset and I reached the summit right now (9 PM). On the way up I got to watch the sunset, which was nice. It was cold and windy on top, but quite nice and the moon was bright. It made for a tiring night since I had to get up early for work the next morning.

March 7 2023

On my way to a project, I climbed Colorado Mines Peak in the late evening. I had hoped climb it in time to watch the sunset, but I had to pick up a vehicle at work so started too late. I did get to see the sunset on the way up and got to watch the stars come out before watching the moon rise from the summit. It was a little cold on top, but it was a beautiful night.

October 8 2015

On the way back from taking a test in Denver, I made a quick run up Colorado Mines Peak. It was a beautiful day and warm for the time of year. I only had to walk through a little snow.

December 4 2009:

Today I climbed Colorado Mines Peak alone. I was hoping to climb Flora as well, but didn’t make it.

It was “pleasantly chilly” below timberline and it wasn’t that cold when climbing, but above timberline, it was very windy. By the time I was above 12,000 feet the wind was screaming across the Continental Divide. I found out that my new winter pants aren’t as warm as my other ones and it was pretty chilly. I estimated the wind was at 30-50 mph on the upper slopes, but some gust could have been higher.

I struggled to the summit, but once on the summit, I didn’t stay long. I recorded the temperature at -4F, which would put the windchill at -37F (-61F on the old windchill chart!). Unfortunately, I went to adjust my goggles and accidentally loosened my hat which the wind quickly stole and sent it flying towards Denver, Kansas or wherever. I long gave up the thought of climbing Flora so I took some photos from the summit of Colorado Mines Peak and headed back down.

August 3 2003:

With wife and 14.5 month old son. Son and wife stayed at Colorado Mines Peak while I quickly went up to Flora.
