Columnar Jointing
A trail to the East from the summit of Compton Peak leads to a great example of columnar jointing in the Catoctin greenstone (paleobasalt)

At the summit area there is a trail leading west from the AT over the top of the summit to a view point overlooking the valley. Directly opposite that trail there is one going east. Follow the one to the east to where it ends at some rocks with a view and then go around or through the rocks and turn around and look back at them.

Yes Buz, I know that trail. But I didn't remember that sight. Very nice shot. I will try and find that if I go back there.
