Copperhead Row

Copperhead Row
This family of at least four copperheads lives on a climb in a crack at one of the most popular trad areas here in the Red River Gorge, The Fortress Wall. Take a close look and remember what they look like. If you grabbed ahold of this while you were climbing, the hour you need to get help, is going to be about all you have.
The babies are the ones to fear.

Never mess with a Copperhead!! I have friends that have been bitten and they say it is the worst pain there is.

Thank You so much!
The fellow on lead started yelling for me to dirt him about a hundred times. He had been bitten as a child and knew what these guys were all about. They are all over the place here in Red River Gorge but won't mess with you unless you do something to them. Reaching in a blind crack for a handhold and grabbing one might qualify as a "something". I always try to look first for sure!

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."   --Calvin Coolidge
