Penelope May and I hiked more or less the DPS route starting from the "Corkscrew sign" on the highway on December 6th, 2010. We by-passed the initial hill to the right and followed the wash all the way to the 2 dry waterfalls. Above this we continued toward the "hole in the black rock", above which we turned first left then up aiming at the right side of the "Gunsight" pinnacle which is left of the large red tower on the skyline. Once at the saddle, we found the trail to the summit. Came down the SE facing rib, the one on which the DPS variation (going up) is located. Good hike, nice views.

We started our hike at 6:00pm. I didn't think we were even going to start our hike at all given that it was getting so late. We made it to the really steep craggly part of the hike by 8:00pm, and hiked back mostly in the dark. We made it to our car by 10:30pm with a full moon on our side. Definitely the craziest night hike we've ever done. The trail was difficult to find at first; just really keep your eyes open for the carins along the way. Awesome & memorable experience. Next time I'd like to make it to the summit. Looking forward to it!

Wow, tough day. Did this with Rob Egan in a total time of 6 hours. I very much disagree with the Class 2 rating. It's more Class 3 with a touch of Class 4 when the wash runs out. Trail gets a bit tough to follow below the saddle, look for the ducks along the way. Also, when you head up the wash and hit the first dry fall, track back about 50 ft. and look for the skirt trail on the west side of the wash.

A hike that is a good way to learn desert terrain. Had the company of 3 others on the summit.

Just one of the many peaks I climbed while a seasonal ranger in Death Valley. As a geologist by education, I love looking at the rocks and structural forms of desert peaks since the lack of vegetation exposes all. Stopped to do it on the trip to Beatty to buy food (cost too much at the stores in Death Valley).

Easy morning hike from the pavement. Some fun scrambling, too. Continued on the ridge north several miles to the area highpoint. Trip Report

I climbed this on the second day of a monthlong solo trip to Death Valley. I thoroughly enjoyed the hike--ridge-top traverses most of the way. Saw a group of chukars in the wash just before the route climbs out up onto the low ridges.

I took the ridge route up (close to eastern trace on Wingding's map, will post exact trace later), and the wash down. I much preferred the ridge route.

1h45m up, 1h15m down, but I jogged part of the way back.

Passed some mystery hikers, apparently going to the peak; never saw them again, even after 40 min on top and lots of scanning the lower slopes. Their car was still at the "trailhead" when I came back

This is a fairly fast drive from Vegas via us95; on a good day, takes just a bit over 2 hrs, and is about 140 miles.

Thimble looks much nicer.

I solo scrambled up this one on New Year's Eve, 2005. Lots of fun trying to find my way up. There were less than a dozen names in the summit log for 2005. Snow/Rain in the Panamints, but just wind and brooding clouds overhead for me. Took me a few hours round trip. Good fun!
