Slide/Cornell/Wittenberg  Sucess!

Climbed Cornell Mt the LONG way from Phoenicia via the Romer Mountain Trail, over Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide and down to the Slide Mt Trailhead. 16 miles, 5000' of gain, and a car shuttle.

Legit Hike!!!!!  Sucess!

We started at the eastern parking lot and bagged Slide with Cornell and Whittenburg, and then continued down the west side and then looped around through the Panther Mountain trail head. Holy moly there was a lot of people at the Panther Mountain trail head. Everyone was going to Giant Ledge so after the intersection we continued straight and the people disappeared. It seemed like there was tons of downhill! It never seemed to end! Right at the end of the hike there is a super steep uphill just when you think you can cruise to the car. It is super steep, but after that it is an easy downhill. This hike was awesome! Technical in some spots, and good views, what more can you ask for. Probably 15 miles with around 5,000ft of elevation gain and lost.

From West Side  Sucess!

Took the easy way up, but continued over to Cornell and Wittenberg. Awful foggy day with no views, but we made the most of it.

We combined Wittenberg, Cornell and Slide into a nice weekend loop. We camped between Slide and Cornell. A great time in a great part of the Catskills!!

A Quick Trip  Sucess!

Started at the Woodland Campground Trailhead taking the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide trail late Friday night and made it only a mile or so up the trail. Spent the night off of the trail. Started early Saturday morning and made it to Wittenberg, Cornell, and Slide and back to the car in just over three hours. Quite a bit of traffic on the trail.

New Years Eve Day Hike  Sucess!

Started at woodland Valley trailhead and came over the Witt. Trails were mostly frozen with increasing packed snow/ice over 2,500 feet. No real issues climbing, light traction is very helpful. I had light cramp-ons on which were beneficial climbing the icy chutes and ledges over my Microspikes. Bumped into a gentleman on my way down and he had no traction with him. Was regretting it and having a slow go of it. A few blow downs but no real issues, though one required doing a limbo to get under with my pack on. ;-)

Weather was about 22F at the trailhead at 7am and about 8F at the summit of the Witt plus some spirited breezes. Turned my energy bars to rocks!

First winter hike this year for me!  Sucess!

Had been planning to do the Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide Loop for over a month and things kept getting in the way so even though we had snow coming in I decided to keep my plans for the hike. Arrived at the trailhead in Woodland Valley from CT at about 8am which was later than planned but the usual 2.5 hour drive was slower than anticipated since the snow started earlier than expected. On the trail by 8:15 and the snow was in full swing but it was a very peaceful snow. Temps at base were about 16F with no decipherable wind. The structure of the trail was obscured by about 3-4" of light snow which made those gnarly roots and rocks I remembered from the summer even more miserable since you couldn't see them before they wrenched your foot into an unnatural position. The hike was easy and incredibly quiet up to the juncture of the trails for Terrace Mtn and The Witt. Then it got icier as I hit the various ledges. I found it much easier to climb from the point on with my ice axe instead of my trekking poles so I could pull myself up. In summer the hand holds in the rock are plentiful but not in the winter with mitts on and 5-10F temps. The summit of The Witt was beautiful with moderate winds of 10-12MPH and temps around 5F w/o the windchill. The view wasn't great, I could barely see the outlines of the nearby mountains. I headed on to Mt Cornell and had a fun time of the Cornell Crack... it was icy, snowy and challenging, but climbable with my micro-spikes and ice axe. Cornell was a nice rest with good wind protection but no views. I started down into the saddle between Cornell and Slide but decided that I was interested in climbing the final pitch to Slide alone in the ice, snow, and continuing storm so I headed back down. Descending Cornell Crack was tougher than ascending it with a pack on. When I got back to the Witt the weather had briefly cleared enough for me to see into the valley better and Samual's Point but not the reservoir beyond it.
The whole hike was about 9.3 miles out and back. I had planned to do the whole 16 mi loop to Slide and around but my pace was slower than usual with the snow and ice so it took me about 4.5 hours for the out & back trip.

Not enough snow yet for snowshoes to float you above the structure. I recommend microspikes through to Cornell... or cramp-ons and ropes if you plan to do Slide.

2nd peak of the day  Sucess!

Aside from the western view of Slide there wasn't much to see in the distance but I did like the scrambling on both sides of the mountain. The col between Cornell and Slide was an interesting stretch of woods with plenty of campsites.

My 35th Catskill Peak  Sucess!

I finished my Catskill 35 on this peak, during a trip over the Burroughs Range from Slide TH to Woodland Valley TH. The views on the ascent back at Slide were great.

Burroughs Range Traigh  Sucess!

Hit all three peaks on the ridge traverse. Good exercise, not much water. Explored a little around in the col between Slide and Cornell, lots of trash around many of the campsites, which was sad. We picked up what we could carry in our day packs.

Good exercise. No views  Sucess!

We did the loop of Wittenberg, Slide, and Cornell because this was equidistant for me and Dave Varga to meet and assess our compatibality because we are going to do some climbing in the Canadian Rockies in July. Not much for views once the trees are in leaf. Great exercise with a 25 lb pack though.
