Crater Lake

Crater Lake

Crater Lake in the northern Seven Devils is possibly the ugliest mountain lake anywhere. It has no outlet, yet the water sinks or evaporates significantly by summer's end. The surrounding forest burned in the mid-90s. It serves as a watering hole for livestock and elk. The only interesting thing is that its the only site in Idaho for one rare plant species. August 2005

Wow

Quite the glowing review. What's the rare plant species?

Re: Wow

The plant is many headed sedge (Carex synchnocephala). It likes the mud between high and low water lines like you see in the photo. But its generally limited to large river bottoms in Canada and the northern States. Strange to see it up in a mountain range like this. It has a pretty wide range, but is very sparse in most of it. I'd post a picture, but sedges aren't much to look at.

Re: I would

If you can send me a email address I can send a couple photos to you. I don't think I can attach them to an email through SP.
