Croce Carrel on the path above Rifugio L'Orionde. Carrel and Bich, guides from Valtournenche, climbed the Italian Ridge a few days after Whymper climbed the Hornli Ridge. "Carrel never fell!" He died at this spot in 1891.

The Epigraph

"ICI EST MORT L'INTREPIDE GUIDE
JEAN ANTOINE CARREL
LE 26 AOUT 1891 AGE DE 62 ANS.
UNE PRIERE POUR LE REPOS DE SON AME."

My translation:
"Here died the intrepid guide, Jean Antoine Carrel, on 26 August 1891, aged 62.
A prayer for the repose of his soul."
