Crossing Serac Fall

These broken pieces of seracs apparently came down from the west face of Colfax Peak. We crossed a field of this debris on our way to the summit of Mount Baker. Photographed at 8300 feet on the Coleman Glacier, April 15, 2007.

i love Baker

but i sure has heck wouldn't want to be on it when serac crumbles like that...

The amount of surface area these ice chunks covered was immense. It was neat to see because it made a familiar area new and interesting again.

Wow

I'd hate to have been standing there when that happened. Especially in the dark.

No kidding. This was one of the largest debris fields I've ever seen in the mountains. Where I took this shot, I was at least a tenth of a mile downhill from where it all came off.
