Curious Grizzly Cubs

Curious Grizzly Cubs

These two cubs were very interested in me and kept standing up and craning their necks to check me out. Fortunately, their mother, who was about four body lengths ahead of them, was not. Finally, she gave a huff that must have said to them to quit looking at me and catch up, which is what they did. The perspective here is close to real-life since this shot was with a focal length of 105 mm; my telephoto lens stayed in my backpack, which I wanted to keep on in case the mother charged. This encounter occurred on the Highline Trail as I was hiking from Granite Park Chalet back to Logan Pass. The bears were near enough to be quite close but far enough that no one felt threatened (though I did unsheath the pepper spray). Glacier National Park, MT-- August 2003

Re: yikes

It was awesome, though probably not as much as that scene you have in your pictures. It's one of my "wildlife dreams" to go to one of those places where you can "safely" view the grizzlies feeding on the salmon.

So cute!

Of course, I was taught that when a bear stands (outside the circus), he/she means business.

Re: So cute!

Fortunately, the mother wasn't standing. She rudely disregarded me in just seconds (thank you, thank you). But those cubs were like little puppies (not that I'm saying one ought to try scratching behind their ears).

Made my first trip up to Glacier 8/10. Amazing! Didn't see any bears though...

Re: Glacier

I hope you get back there; it gets better each time. And sooner or later, you'll see a bear out there. Thanks for looking!
