Curlycap Gumweed

Curlycap Gumweed

with the backdrop of Lone Peak. 7/22/08 Grindelia squarrosa ... literally "scaly / with parts sticking out sideways" in Latin. One of a few dependable late-summer foothill prairie flowers, the gumweed is very easy to id. If in doubt, gently squeeze the scaly green parts of the flowers (scientifically known as involucre) and feel the gummy residue on your fingertips.
