San Juan TownsThe following overviews of the San Juan towns include a few selected links to recommended businesses that may serve your needs during your visit to the San Juans.
OURAY
Ouray is located in the northwest part of the San Juans, surrounded on three sides by giant San Juan peaks. The town is perfectly positioned for climbs of the surrounding summits, including the popular fourteeners. There are plenty of services available and lodging ranges from camping to posh Victorian hotels. Excellent dining is available along with many other fine services, as well as an internet cafe. The Sneffels Range, Dallas Divide, Cimarron and Ouray groups can be accessed from Ouray.

TELLURIDE
Telluride is at the head of the San Miguel Valley, surrounded on three sides by the San Juan Mountains. Some of the state's most challenging mountains are approached from this historic hamlet, now regarded by many as the Aspen of Southwest Colorado, thanks to the ever-growing and well known Telluride Ski Resort. Fine dining and lodging are available. Fee camping is available in the nearby Illium Valley. Unless you're camping on NF land, expect to pay increased rates. Telluride is home to the world famous Telluride Bluegrass and Film Festivals. The Telluride-Ophir, Ouray, Sneffels, Dallas Divide, San Miguel, Ice Lake Basin and Rico Mountains can all be accessed from Telluride.

SILVERTON
Silverton is totally surrounded by mountains in the heart of the western San Juan. Many climbs can be easily staged from this dynamic community. Served by the historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad most of the year, Silverton serves a myriad of recreational activities in addition to mountain climbing. During part of the winter, Silverton is a very quiet place, and can often be isolated from the world by avalanches that close Highway 550. The Silverton, Ouray, Telluride-Ophir, Molas, Ice Lake Basin, Grenadier, Needles and Highlands ranges can all be accessed from Silverton!

RIDGWAY
Modern and rustic lodging and dining, along with all types of services are available in Ridgway. Just to the north is the recently developed Ridgway Reservoir, which boasts excellent facilities. Located at the junction of Highways 62 and 550, Ridgway serves many recreational activities including golf, fishing and boating, hunting, hiking, 4-wheeling, camping, climbing and much more. Once a sleepy little town on the verge of extinction, Ridgway has prospered in support of tourism and local agriculture. The views of the SanJuans from this town are exceptional. The Cimarron, Uncompagre, Sneffels Range and Dallas Divide groups are accessed from Ridgway.

LAKE CITY
Lake City is the quietest of all the San Juan towns. The restful atmosphere is a welcome change from a harried lifestyle. Lodging and dining are fine and rustic in atmosphere. Lake City caters to a variety of sportsmen, particularly hunters, 4-wheelers and snowmobilers. NearbyLake San Cristobal boasts trophy fishing. The site of the Alferd Packer cannibalistic massacre is not far from town. The Uncompahgre and Lake City groups can be accessed from Lake City, including popular fourteeners Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn Peaks.

CREEDE
Creede is another quiet town, often shutting down most businesses at 5:00 pm, even on a summer's evening. Fine dining, lodging and outfitting services are available. The famous Creede Repitore Theater is part of this town's rich heritage. There's plenty to do as Creede caters to many recreational interests. Creede is a good staging point for climbs in the La Garita, East-Central San Juan, Highlands and Lake City (Group B) ranges.

SOUTH FORK
Located at the juction of Highway 145 and 160, South Fork is a sportsman's mecca serving the east side of the San Juan range. Lodging and dining at reasonable prices are available, along with a host of services. Access for the La Garita, South San Juan and East-Central San Juan is attained from South Fork. Various camping opportunities are available.

Most recreational activities are supported by Pagosa Springs, located directly south of the sprawling San Juans. The nice treat is the hot springs, in addition to lodging and dining. This is a quiet town, a great spot to relax in. Access the South San Juan and East Central San Juan from this town.
DURANGO
All types of services, lodging and dining are available in this city on the southwest side of the San Juans. The famed Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage train departs from Durango daily during normal operating season. Durango is a college town, but also a nice place for retirees. Durango serves all recreational interests and is great for approaches to the La Plata, West Needles, Molas, Needles, Grenadier, and Oso groups of the SanJuans.
