Thanks much for the comment! They are certainly scary looking, but those pincers really aren't very functional. I'm uploading a shot tonight of my two-year old son (now three) holding a different one that we found on Prague Castle last spring. The females, which just look like really big beetles without the pincers, actually deliver a nastier bite that does hurt. They are called stag beetles because the pincers look like a deer's antlers.

My ancestors (on my mother's side) originated
in that part of the world.

This beetle reminds me of the "Scarab" beetle
seen in the first and second "MUMMY" movies.

I'm assuming this beetle has a bad reputation, similar to the Pit Bull and the
behemoth SUV here in America. Peace, Larry.

I love Prague; I'm of Czech descent and have lived there for a total of about 2.5 years and it's my favorite city in Europe. The male beetles are completely harmless, but the females, who don't have the antlers and just look like big beetles, can give a bit of a bite.

He's about 4" long. If you look at my gallery you'll see a photo of my son holding one that gives a little perspective. This particular one was buzzing around at night and we thought it was a humming bird until it flew into my wife and she screamed.

looks like he could chomp my head off (if it were 2" or so). It's scary.
