that one can see both the highest point (Mt. Whitney) and the lowest point (Badwater)in the contiguous United States from Dante's View. If that is true it might be worth mentioning here. Of course, that is definitely true of the summit of Telescope Peak. Nice write-up by the way!

why do names of geographic locations almost never have possessive apostrophes when they should?

Since you asked - it's BGN policy, though even they don't know the origin of it. See here for their take on it.

My head is spinning after reading that "explanation." So why not rename Pikes Peak as Pike Peak, then? As an English major and teacher, I suffer undue stress from this!

It seems to be along the lines of, "Because we've always done it that way." Gotta love how government agencies weed out critical thinking.
