Serious yes, and I think it fits nicely as an illustration to the subject. (I almost added a smiley but did not:) )

I was also wondering what he is holding in his hand. Some research is needed.

Indeed, the hour glass in the hands of the Death may be the right symbol of the finite nature of man.

The title of this opera is "Memento mori" and translated from Latin means "remember that you must die" and the hourglass makes sense.
