Dent de Mesdi

Dent de Mesdi

The name of this striking dolomite tower, here seen from Kolfuschg/Colfosco, means "tooth".

beautiful shot

The tooth looks like a nice little walk-up at the end. :)

I love the

texture of the rocks. Ejnar, don't you
have a lot of rockfall and avalanches
in these mountains, or is that mainly in
late winter and early spring? When is the
climbing season in the Dolomites? Is it
now a "year-round" activity???

Re: I love the

Thank you, Larry. The rocks are quite firm, so there isn't that much rockfall, it is most dangerous where there are people above you who may loosen smaller stones that will drop down on you, so one should always wear a helmet in steep Dolomite rock. I have never been there in the winter, but I think that there wont be too many avalanches in the rocky areas, because they are too steep for much snow to gather. In the lower, more gently sloping areas where there is much skiing it may be different. Judging from a climb we once did after a September snowfall, it will be more difficult to do rock climbing in winter when there is snow and ice on the holds, but again I haven't tried it. Ejnar

Yes, I would

advocate or wear a helmet where rockfall
and people are present. I remember one
time I was doing a hike/scramble in the
Cascades of western Washington state, and
I heard rockfall above me. I suddenly look
up, and there appears this mountain goat
above me. (If I would of got it's picture,
it would have went very FAR in SP.)
Thank you for the valuable beta info, Ejnar!
