Desolation Exploration (sneaks and route pics)  Sucess!

Tried to detail the climb as thoroughly as I could while highlighting various options up West Desolation. Also of interest is a sneak that avoids some of the most difficult moves on East Desolation, a link to my report is here, feel free to comment! Great day, aside from the smoke from the Cameron Peak Fire. Copy and paste link into browser, it's just a Wordpress blog link, nothing crazy. https://whatsatimo.home.blog/2020/08/19/the-desolation-peaks-west-yds-class-3-east-yds-class-3-or-4/

Dane Johnson  Sucess!

Had a goal to summit Hagues then on to desolations and back to my truck at corral creek about 20 miles with my dog. We slept on Rowe mountain in some rocks outta the wind. Had to help my dog down several hard core drops. We decended down hazeline lake scenic but no fish and way steep trek down to Hagues Creek following animal trails and the creek.

Cool Peaks  Sucess!

We hit all 5 summits marked on the map and had to burrow into the summit of one to retrieve a fallen phone. We got it back. Fun peaks that see very little traffic.

From Chapin/Ypislon  Sucess!

The weather was absolutely perfect! I made it to the west summit and to the saddle before I ran out of time. Took longer then I expected and was looser then I thought. Will be back later for the east summit. Headed straight down to the valley floor and took Chapin Pass trail back to the TH. One of the more enjoyable mountains I've been up.

From Chapin Pass via Chapin, Chiquita, Ypsilon  Sucess!

Total ascents = 2. First time from Chapin Pass via Chapin, Chiquita and Ypsilon ... finished the day by going on out to Flatiron then descending into the Chapin Creek drainage and hiking back to Chapin Pass.

From Chapin Pass to Corral Creek  Sucess!

Having already climbed Chapin, Chiquita, and Ypsilon we by-passed them and went around to Desolation. Desolation is well worth the effort with large angular rocks and a little route finding to get to the true summit. We continued north-east along the ridge to Flatiron Mtn. then followed the Flatiron ridge down to were we met the Mummy Pass trail amd out to a second car we'd left at the Corral Creek trailhead. Some of the best tundra cruising in the park is along the Flatiron ridge.

Re: From Chapin Pass to Corral Creek

Curios about that way.. I dropped into hazeline lake instead of staying on the ridge..

Route Climbed: Chapin Pass Date Climbed: September 25, 2003  Sucess!

Increadible summit block. Made for a great afternoon hike on my 29th birthday. Easy, though long hike to the peaks and lots of dirty loose scrambling leading to the East summit.
