From Island Lakes. Took long way down instead of dropping back to TH via Mosquito Lake. Highly recommended to do it this way instead of an out and back. Way too many people.
I was surprised how many people were doing this hike via trail 1119 (on a Thursday). This hike is very worthwhile, but the Causeway is seemingly promoted as a gimmick. A hiker asked me to take her dog (leashed) across - she was paralyzed with fear.
With Rachael, we have been interested in hiking this loop for a while but our peak objectives kept getting in the way. It was nice to finally make the loop, it was an enjoyable hike to a cool feature in an area we haven't explored enough.

Standard from Stillwater Reservoir
Wow! The reservoir is beautiful, the basin is amazing, the wildflowers were going gonzo... We touched the summit proper, then enjoyed a stroll across this amazing little land form. Absolutely incredible scenery all around! Mikey and I joined Aaron & Ellen. Logan, Gabby & Jackson enjoyed the summit but didn't place their four paws on the narrow ridge, for safety reasons.

Short outing
Short visit on the way home from Dinosaur NM. Devil's Causeway was a great way to spend an afternoon! I'd love to try a longer loop through here.

The original plan was to climb Snowmass Mountain, but the weather forecast was bad on the 30th, so Kessler and I decided to climb the Lost Lakes Peaks and Devils Causeway instead.
We got a pretty late start and we had a long day ahead of us, so we moved rather expeditiously. We started at Ripple Creek and followed the Chinese Wall trail to near the Lost Lakes Peaks and climbed both of them. The east peak was a spectacular one with a great view down a huge drop. We then headed for the Mosquito Benchmark. The trail was mostly faded along the gentle ridge. On marmot was seen along the way. We climbed the Mosquito BM before heading over to and climbing over the spectacular Devils Causeway. The Causeway was interesting with a big pack. Another marmot was seen along the way.
We camped at a nice little spring at the base of the Causeway and at 10,800 feet. It was a long day!
August 30
Since we packed in a hurry, we forgot our sleeping pads and it was a long night. I was also congested and I didn't bring any medication.
We woke up tired and headed along the trail visiting Causeway Lake, Long Lake, East Lost Lake and West Lost Lake. We made it to the trailhead at 2 PM. It started raining and hailing at the end, but luckily we were almost to the car by then. With climbing the peaks and no sleep, we were tired after the 26 mile hike.
September 6 2008
After getting the weekend off last minute, we hurried and packed the gear Friday night to head off to the Flat Tops. We arrived fairly late and camped just below Stillwater Reservoir.
In the morning (sort of chilly, but not cold: 31F), Shaylee (four years old), Kessler (six years old), Kim and I set off for the Devils Causeway. It was very windy and somewhat chilly so Shaylee and Kim decided to head down at timberline and just below the saddle north of the Causeway. Kessler and I went up to and over Peak 11820 to the Causeway and he had a lot of fun crossing it. I made sure he held my hand the entire time.
After crossing the causeway, we headed SW and completed the entire Causeway Loop (10.5) miles. It was a great day; quite windy and chilly but with zero threat from thunderstorms.
