Dolgi hrbet is made of an immense north face, a short south wall, and a long summital ridge that runs E-W. The length and shape of the summital ridge must be the reason for the mountain being called " the long back", and a daring marked-and-secured-hiking-path follows this ridge.
The south wall above Veliki podi is short (ca 120 m) and seldom visited (Veliki podi is a high, karstic terrace with a bivouac hut).

To the W, Dolgi hrbet is linked to Grintovec at the Mlinarsko sedlo saddle (2334 m).
To the E: Štruca and further Skuta.

The central feature at the upper end of the Ravenska kočna valley (Jezersko) is the Dolgi hrbet N face, the longest routes being 1000 m tall. This is one of the big walls in the range, offering ca. 50 routes (choice of climbs).

Jezersko is a community (along the Jezernica stream) on the northern side of the range, and Ravenska kočna is one of the large valleys opening towards the spread out Jezersko locality.

Two high terraces are on each side of the Dolgi hrbet N face: Ledine/Vadine to the E, and Spodnje Ravni to the W. On each of the terraces there is a mountain hut: the Kranjska koča hut (E) and the Češka koča hut.

Getting There

For general orientation, please click the coords in the primary info above (Jezersko is along road 210, between Eisenkappel and Kranj)

Getting to the Jezersko/tovorna žičnica trailhead:
The Jezersko/tovorna žičnica trailhead is at the upper end of the road entering the Ravenska kočna valley. This trailhead is the start of two paths to the Kranjska koča hut, and of two paths to the Češka koča hut. The options mentioning "Žrelo" are "very demanding" by hiking standards.

Ravenska kočna and Makekova kočna are two large valleys opening towards the spread out Jezersko locality. The Makekova kočna valley ends at Jezersko-center (Jezersko Kazina bus stop). Upstream along the Jezernica, the Ravenska kočna valley ends at the Planšarsko jezero lake (Jezersko Jezero bus stop).

> Upstream of Jezersko-center, split south off the main road, following signposts for Planšarsko jezero (the lake) until the lake inn. Next, circle the lake to the right (looking upstream). This road is asfalted until the Ancelj ranch, and in winter this is often as far as we can drive. Continue along the macadamized road, following the Tovorna žičnica signpost as splits come up. There is parking space around the lower station of the tovorna žičnica, the cargo cableways supplying the Češka and the Kranjska hut.

NORTH FACE:
A very demanding, but marked and secured hiking path crosses from one terrace (and hut) to the other, permitting an insight of the lower part of the N face.
Most climbs in the North face are approached either from the Kranjska koča hut or from the Češka koča hut, but the longest lines are approached from the Jezersko/tovorna žičnica trailhead, first heading towards Žrelo (Žrelo is the couloir system around the lowest point of the wall).

RIDGE CROSSING:
West start from Mlinarsko saddle, or East start from the notch between Štruca and Dolgi hrbet (called Škrbina, 2408 m).
Škrbina may be attained on the way down from Skuta, or along the Veliki podi grounds.
Mlinarsko saddle is approached from the North (from the Češka koča), or from the south, for instance from the Cojzova hut.
The secured path leading from the Česka koča hut to Mlinarsko saddle ascends the Dolgi hrbet NW face.

SOUTH
Climbs in the Dolgi hrbet south wall are approached from the Veliki podi grounds (to the left on this image).
The Gamsov skret unmarked path is a direct approach from the Kamniška Bistrica trailhead to Veliki podi.

Red Tape

Unless signalized (barrier, signpost), and upon your own responsibility, macadamized roads are allowed and visible on maps (these roads are mainly maintained for lumbering and hut cable station access purposes).
Fishing & hunting is regulated.
Wild camping and open fires are not allowed.
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps are part of the Natura 2000 program.
