Donner Peak didn't look particularly impressive or welcoming on the morning of March 1, 2003 as Craig and I tried to figure out where the Norwand was. It was snowing very lightly at this point.

Hasn't voted | Actually, I don't think it's wood. It looked like a stone/concrete mix but I didn't stare at it too much. It has to be strong enough to withstand years of heavy snowfall. Normally I try to crop out things like that, but the "snowshed" is a pretty integral part of understanding the north side of Donner. On the way out during the winter, typically skiers and hikers will ski down the North Face, stop on top of the snowshed, and traverse over it till you hit the rocks of Snowshed Wall before heading down to the car. I snowshoed on top of it on my way out. You can see them marked on this USSS map. It's what bearbnz calls the China Wall in his summit log.
