Well, the summit is a series of blocky pillars that require some actual climbing. The final, highest block looked to be just a couple feet higher than the one you walk up to on the west side. I did manage to scramble up to the middle pillar, but could not find a decent way up to the highest one. Being winter and all, having no rope or crampons or climbing partner, I decided to play it safe. Great day of snowshoeing in the Bitterroots!

A long trek along the east-west ridge of Downing Mountain on a super-hot day, just about killed me.

But I survived to enjoy some really spectacular views along the way.
