Druid Arch in the Needles

Druid Arch in the Needles
Fantastic and massive Druid Arch towers over the head of Elephant Canyon in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This arch is nearly 500 feet high and its size is not readily apparent. The juniper trees at the base of the formation are a pretty good clue, though. This incredible spot is reached by hiking up Elephant Canyon 5.5 miles from the Elephant Hill trailhead. Some scrambling and friction work on slickrock is required, along with plenty of time, but it's worth it! Spring, 2006.

What a beautiful picture of Druid Arch. We are going down there next week and are curious about the route. Was it difficult to follow in areas? And what do you mean by friction work? Should we be packing in our rock climbing gear? Thanks for posting and HAPPY TRAILS out there.

The route is easy to follow. Refer to the route page description I wrote up for the Needles page. Friction is walking up steep slickrock and relying on your shoes/boots to hold you in place. No gear needed. HAVE FUN!
