The rope is appreciated when you make the transfer from the ladder to the rock as Duane just did. This shot was on 3 Fingers, an amazing place. The Everett Mountaineers put the rope up and take it down at the beginning and ending of each season (very variable)but this shot will give you a feel for the appreciation aspect.

Update: I have had the pleasure of hiking with Duane on several occasions and everytime I hike with him I appreciate his personality and enjoyment of the mountains. He and Bob recently became the first two people to ever ascend all the USA ultra peaks (adding in pre-eruption Mt.St.Helens) and if you factor out the pre-eruptive St. Helens, they were the 3rd and 4th to accomplish the feat.

Radek, thanks for your votes and that is not an ax, just a piece of metal that sits next to the metal rod. A cool place to put a lookout.
