The wild raspberries and blueberries were common, and very tasty!!! The common loons (official state birds) were not so common, but we saw a pair of them on the lake. The mosquitos (unofficlal state birds) were abundant.

Five years to the day that I climbed Mt. Marcy (NY) as my first state highpoint, I completed the lower 48 here atop Eagle Mountain. Bright, warm, sunny day. Beatufil day to celebrate.

Beautiful, thick forest all the way up the trail. Whale Lake is the best part of the hike, in my opinion. The reflection of the trees in the water is just awesome. Further on, the vista near the summit is incredible. Probably the best view anywhere in Minnesota. The trail itself is not very challenging, in terms of endurance, but is very annoying, with basketball-sized rocks everywhere. I don't think I'd do this hike again. The last mile or so out is grueling; the rocks just never end.

The mosquitoes were bad, but I've seen worse, and bug spray wipes worked great. Saw very few other animals -- one tiny garter snake and a squirrel. That was pretty much it besides some birds. It was a great experience overall. Took 4hrs 20min, including 25-30 minutes at the summit for lunch and rest.

One other thing. We brought hiking poles which helped immensely. They saved our knees from being bashed by the rocks on the way down.

The edge

Finding the TH was a challenge in itself;
The route was very scenic...
Coming back from the top and my friend sprained her ankle...
That wasn't a pretty sight!!

This is a fun hike. Whale Lake is nice. I liked hiking through the forest. And there are two really nice overlooks on this mountain. The whole North Shore area of MN I found to be very scenic and beautiful.

Hiked to the top with son Ryan and friends Ed, Joe, and Martha. Very hot day, but a nice hike in the woods. Met several other hikers. Had lunch at the summit and then drove to Grand Marais to participate in the North Shore Dragonboat Races. Fun weekend. HP #17.

I've been to the top a few times while hiking in the area. Fun 'climb' for Minnesota. :-)

Great hike for a nice summer day... stood atop the rock at the summit and beat my chest like King Kong. Not much to see at the summit, but there's a great place to catch some beautiful scenery just short of it. Plenty of roots and rocks on the trail so make sure you watch where you're walking or you'll end up flat on your kisser!

Great hike. Great view. I can't really remember to well but I thought I saw a nice cliff on the south side. Maybe some climbing? Maybe some boulders at the bottom?

Start of the trail head was pretty nice going. Just a regular hiking trail. About 100yds it begins to change to a very rocky terrain. I would recommend that you don't do this in tennis shoes or sandles. ;) Bring some water. The view was very nice at the summit. The view of the mountain in the background of moose lake was pretty cool as well. The pictures don't do the scenery justice. :)

The hike was a little hard on the ankles even with heavy hiking boots on. The trail is full of large jagged rocks as well as roots, fallen trees and mosquitos. If you pace yourself, this is a nice long walk. Some trekking poles will aid in stability over the rougher rocks. The summit is up and back in the trees. The view in the late afternoon is beautiful.

It is a breeze to the summit. While on trail, spoke with a family and they said to pay attention to the rock cairns so you can find the summit. It was a great piece of info. After you pass the first open area, vista, keep going down the trail and look for another clearing. At that clearing, look for a small rock cairn. Hang a right and continue to hike up. You should see another small cairn, follow the trail to the right. You will be a the summit quickly. Like everyone else, the mosquitoes were terrible.

Went back down the clearing for a view of the valley and had lunch. Watched a moose swim, from a distance, through the water.

Looking at the posted pictures, I had no idea that the "hill" in the background of Whale Lake as you first approach it is the actual highpoint. Never gave it any thought when hiking it nor looking at my own pictures from that hike. Fortunately we took a few pics of us at the lake there with Eagle Mountain behind it. Too bad it wasn't more centered but then we'd have to be in the lake.

The hike was great, the mosquitoes were not out yet, saw loons swimming in lake, saw a moose on other side of Whale Lake. The lake was still cold. Ate at the Dairy Queen in Grand Marais. It hit the spot.
