Up Stanley Canyon and then up and over South Peak. Very nice hike.

Trail Closed
Only was able to hike from the visitor center to the main trailhead. Trail is closed because of Waldo Canyon Fire. I didn't think it made it further North than Blodgett Peak. Thought about going on, but didn't want legal problems just to hike a mountain I've done 2 times before. Next time

Short jaunt up
Made an ill-advised attempt--ran out of time and had to turn back. Pretty trail and rugged enough for a good workout. Also, someone forgot to put oxygen in Colorado.

Nice views!
I decided after a week of 50 and 60 degree temps to finally attempt this one. The trail was still snowy and icy in places which made the going slow but the views from the top were worth every step.

Well, I've never had so many young people call me "ma'am" on a hiking trail in my life. No gripes about well mannered cadets, though. This was quite a steep climb on such a hot day (nearly 90 degrees in COS), but I was rewarded with a breezy, bug-free summit all to myself for about 30 minutes. I enjoyed lunch and views of the Academy & Pikes Peak to the sound of wind in evergreen bows and birds chirping. This was a nice day, and a good solo hike to think and be at peace. To be sure, the down-hike will take its toll on worn out knees and hips...gettin' old is painful sometimes.

Well marked, nice day. Unique views of the Academy.
I was quite surprised by the large number of people on the peak. I was also surprised by how steep the trail was. All in all a good hike and some great views. This would be quite an adventure with snow and ice!

Stanley Canyon
I climbed this peak(s) from Stanley Canyon. About half-way between the trailhead and the reservoir, I scrambled up a granite ridge, then bushwacked to the summit. Interesting route...crappy rock!

11/14/06 Climb
Started climbing this peak at 3:00 p.m. on 11/14/06. It was in the 30's and the wind was very strong(up to 60 m.p.h.). I had nothing but a sweater and some shorts on. When I arrived to the canyon at the base, I started making my way up the peak and everything was going fine. Then, about halfway up, it goy very steep and icy. I had to use my hands for support and there was snow everywhere so they were freezing. I climbed for about an hour then decided to head down because it was about to get dark and I was freezing! When I got down my hands were purple and numb. This was my first attempt at this peak and an unsuccessful one. This has been one of the steepest climbs I've ever done(raising 2000 feet in about 1 mile). I will retry this peak when I'm better prepared and have some gloves.
P.S. Don't climb this peak in winter unless you're planning on slipping a lot and freezing your butt off! You may need crampons because there's tons of thick ice.
Hiked this a long time ago with some friends. Make sure you take the correct cut-off.

Family's First Hike
Checked out the web page to find an easy mountain for the family to do together. My wife smokes and still hasn't made it up the Incline, and though my 9- and 13-year old had done Rocky and Mount Manitou and the Incline, my 5-year old was completely new to this.
I couldn't have been more wrong today as we climbed the mountain with 2 other families and a young friend. All in all, we had 9 kids, including an 8-month old in a baby back pack, my 3 kids, and 2 other 9-year olds. To top it off, my friend's father who has cancer made the trip. It was supposed to be easy.
Very early on, we made a wrong turn (notice there's no trail page or trail description) and got lost. Making the way back to the main trail, we noticed snow almost immediately. Uh, oh. Not like the sun-beaten Incline, I knew this was going to be bad. Less than a mile in, my wife and my friend's wife turned back along with one of the 9-year olds and the 8-month old. Soon after, my friend's father took a long break, which basically said he wasn't making the summit push. They turned back at the right place because just after that were the most incredible ice fields I'd ever seen! It's hard to describe, but imagine a frozen river that thaws and refrezes each day. There's layers upon layers of ice as much as 2 feet thick. AMAZING!! Anyway, after 3 hours, all of us made it to the top, even the 5-year old who kept repeating that she "loved the mountain!" The other kids went through bouts of hatred and love for the mountain, depending on whether they were slipping on the ice or not.
Coming down was just as bad as going up, as the snowy trail melted slightly, and everything became a skating rink. To help the kids up and down, the adults formed human chains then ended up slipping themselves.
Made the top to see spectacular views, some of the best I've seen from local summits! I think the best view I had all day, though, was, after telling my 5-year old to stay put as I helped my 13-year old up another part of the trail, coming back to see my 5-year old pulling herself up an easy class 3 wall! AMAZING!
So, while being ticked off that the web site didn't give us the most basic of information that could have helped us, this did end up being a great hike (though difficult on the level of Cameron Cone) for the family. Just wish my wife got to see it.

Climbed Eagles (aka North) from the academy with some light snow falling. Great hike with alot of vertical. Make sure to visit neighboring South Peak and an outcrop to the west with sweet views of Pikes.
