Part of a five mile ridge traverse  Sucess!

Using two cars, my brother and I started at Echo Lake, and traversed the ridge from Flagpole Peak to Echo Peak, to Indian rock and then Angora Peak, and down to Angora Lakes parking lot, where the other car was left. A beautiful day filled with voluminous bonus scrambling on high quality granite.

Echo Lakes Trailhead  Sucess!

Echo Peak via Echo Lakes Trailhead, PCT, and Triangle Lake Trail. We were on the trail at 11:15 and made it to the summit by 1:35. We went off-trail for the last 0.5 mile in order to take a more direct route. Party of 2. 5 miles and 2 hour 20 minutes to the summit. Weather was cloudy, with strong winds at the top. Low temperatures required gloves, beanies, and extra layers. The trail was covered in about 4 inches of fresh power, and required some route finding in certain parts. 1,785 ft elevation gain to the summit, and another 375 on the way back near Echo Lakes for a total of 2,165.

Fun scramble, great views  Sucess!

Scrambled up the class 2 and 3 terrain between Upper and Lower Echo Lakes. Ascent to the ridge between Flagpole and Echo was fun and straightforward, with enjoyable scrambling and not too much brush. Magnificent views from the ridge, which I hugged as I went up to Echo Peak. Even better views from the summit. Some snowfields still present but no snow travel is required. Descended following use trails towards Upper Echo Lake and had to deal with some unstable talus and thick brush. My friend took a different descent route, aiming more towards Lower Echo Lake, and had to deal with cliffs and much more brush. Pick your route wisely!

summer lightning  Sucess!

Scrambled up above the moderate terrain between Echo Lakes to the top. Had a lightning bolt strike just behind me, and dropped to the ground for a while. then finished the summit in the rain & thunder bouncing from big boulder to boulder. Chose a different descent, way crappier than the way up (brush & cliffs). Classic little adventure...

From Flagpole Peak  Sucess!

Followed PCT in to beneath Flagpole Peak, up SW slope to tiny saddle NW of peak, then to Flagpole. From Flagpole, followed a varying line, mostly over snow, to Echo Peak. Departed south, straight down boulder field to Upper Echo Lake and out on the PCT.

Main trail then on to Flagpole  Sucess!

Took the main Echo Lake trail and then the spur towards Triangle Lake- but hit the snowline a couple hundred yards up the spur. From there it was cross country on well consolidated snow (no snowshoes/skis) that lasted until 1/4 mile below the summit.

From Echo I continued the ridge traverse over to Flagpole and descended to the lake from there.

Pics and commentary are here.
